Album Review: The Hives - The Black & White Album

October 29th, 2007 | 11 Comments | Posted in MP3, Music, Reviews

It’s been a while but Sweden’s favorite band The Hives finally return with their keenly-anticipated follow-up to 2004’s Tyrannosaurus Hives in the form of the upbeat The Black & White Album.

Spearheaded by the explosive single Tick Tick Boom, which is every bit as incendiary a piece of rock ‘n’ roll as its name suggests, the new long-player is a fast, furious and utterly loud composition that mostly exhilarates.

The album marks the first time the band have ventured out of their homeland to record tracks, and was assembled all over the world because – in the words of the band themselves – “we thought it was time to have other people involved besides ourselves and our closest friends”.

Hence, after initial recording at Hive Manor, in Sweden, the band recorded the majority of the LP in Mississippi with producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello).

They also met with Pharrell Williams in Miami and “made some music with him too” (namely T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S and Well Allright!), before spending a week in London at the historic Olympic studios with Jacknife Lee (U2, Bloc Party, Editors) and then returning to Sweden.

The globe-trotting appears to have served the album well – especially in breaking up the traditional hyperactive Hives sound. A couple of tracks stand out by being different and almost surreal.

T.H.E.H.I.V.E.S., for instance, wears the Pharrell influence on its sleeve, emerging as a genuinely funky cut that’s more bass-heavy than most and even soulful in places. It marks a refreshing change of pace from the hard rocking and you’ll be singing along before you know it!

The surreal touches come courtesy of A Stroll Through Hive Manor Corridors, an instrumental that’s almost child-like in its delivery, and which could just as easily provide the welcome music for a visit to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (or something of its sort), and the Danny Elfman-esque Puppet On A String.

Fortunately, such transgressions are in short supply and the emphasis remains mostly on foot-to-the-pedal rock. Tick Tick Boom sets the standard in spectacularly thrilling fashion, Try It Again goes and underlines it with some thumping percussion and You Got It All… Wrong is a screaming, wailing, head-banging pop-rock blast.

The hand-clap beats fly thick and fast on another high octane favorite, Hey Little World, while Square One Here I Come is a no-nonsense foot-stomper of thrilling intensity.

And Bigger Hole To Fill and Fall Is Just Something Grown-Ups Invented round things off in style.

All in all, then, a very welcome return that pretty much does everything a good Hives album should – pumps you up, rocks you out and leaves you utterly breathless… (il)

Holler-ween Week

October 29th, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Entertainment

Tragically the real holiday is mid-week, but for those who celebrate Halloween with gusto, this past weekend was the week to dress up as your fave-to-love (or hate) celebrity, a slutty anything, or childhood hero. Granted, the good part about having Halloween in the middle of the week is that the celebration is not over yet! And it won’t be over until Thursday morning when you show up to work hungover and full of sugar from last night’s candy binge.

An Elvira wig, a blackened out tooth, a couple tats, and you’re Wino.

—————————–

A friend introduced me to to the Chicago based band He Say, She Say. Not only am I digging this song “Modesty is Key,” but I love Drea’s yellow pumps. Vivacious!

mp3: Modesty is Key [He Say, She Say]

Also, listen to fist pumpingly delicious “Crash Dummie” here.

Visit their Myspace here.

Funny thing about Vampire Weekend: we all graduated from Columbia this past May (sigh, miss college life!). Somewhere between senior year boozing and studying, these four kids created a very good band. Unfortunately I didn’t know these guys while we were at school (although, I did do a pre-orientation program with Chris, who’s sniffing the flower), nor did I even know they were in a band! I really like this song “Walcott.”

I’ve also been listening to Locksley, a band from Wisconsin (some Midwestern goodness). I love “Don’t Wait On Me;” it’s one of those songs that upon listening to the first ten seconds, you know it’s gonna be good. The song begins with an excited guitar, which only gets more more excited as the song introduces vocals which sing “One look is all it took!” Easy rhymes and vibrant and rapid guitar strumming coupled with a happy melody makes for a dancey, tasty musical morsel.

(note: sorry that I am unable to let you guys play the mp3s right off the website, because I too like to listen to songs before I download them, but I have yet to find another website that lets me link directly to the song, not just to a page where you can download the mp3).

Happy Monday!

Why 2007 Was Amazing: The Albums

October 26th, 2007 | 3 Comments | Posted in Entertainment, MP3, Music, Reviews

Kreativika

October is almost over and I figured I’d get a head start on the best albums of the year. This list is a bit different than any other “end of the year lists”. I am not setting them in a numeric order (eg The 50 Best Albums of 2007!). I am ordering them by the month in which they were released in. I am picking 5 albums per month, so by the time I’m finished, I should have 60 albums (and 1 mp3 per album) posted. In late December will I post the Best 40 Albums of 2007 list. Alright, now lets kick start with the best January releases!

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away 83%
MP3 | The Shins - Black Wave

  • Wincing the Night Away is a layered and masterful album that will trap you for hours. Wincing definitely brands the Shins as a “Band That
    Matters”

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? 84%
MP3 | Of Montreal - Suffer For Fashion

  • An extraordinary album about desperation, isolation, and distress. Hissing Fauna… is a testament that Barnes is one of Indie Rock’s most talented songwriters.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen 82%
MP3 | The Good, The Bad & The Queen - History Song

  • The Good, The Bad & The Queen is darker and weirdly beautiful, contrary to what the name suggests. The terrific songs steal the Supergroup’s spotlight. They overcame their hardest obstacle.

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future 72%
MP3 | Klaxons - Golden Skans

  • If its a rave you want, look elsewhere, Myths Of The Near Future is a surprisingly powerful and deep pop influenced dance -rock record bristling with energy, ideas, and glorious, frenetic rhythms.

Norah Jones - Not Too Late 77%
MP3 | Norah Jones - Ocean of Noise (Arcade Fire Cover)

  • Yes, there could have been bigger, better, and wider cuts on Not Too Late, but it doesn’t take away from Norah Jones’ ability to be the
vocalist of the decade. Not Too Late suggests she has paved that path.

Lets Digest Some Top 40 Radio

October 25th, 2007 | 6 Comments | Posted in Entertainment, MP3, Music

Many people (Dem Indie Kids, Metalheads, et la.) have it set in their minds Top 40 radio is the devil, everything that’s wrong with the world, why God hates us, etc. For the most part, I’m right on that bandwagon, but there are some highlights in today’s Top 40 radio, and there are many, many lowlights. Lets digest some Top 40 Radio!

  • Lets kick things off with the top 5. The summer’s champs are all invited, it seems, at No. 1, Kanye’s excellent “Stronger”, I think I’ve made my fair share of commentary on Kanye and this song. Skipping Timbalalnd’s neverdying “The Way I Are” (#2), Pink, who became relevant with a snappy titled track, “U+UR Hand”, struck radio gold with “Who Knew” (#3, last week). Justin Timberlake, who has just released his 6th Top 40 single from his Future Sex/Love Sounds, is riding his “Lovestoned” at No. 5. I’m leaving out, of course, Timbaland’s new single, “Apologize” featuring One Republic. Sigh.

MP3 | Pink - Who Knew

  • The rest of the Top 20 is uneventful and tone deaf. The only stand out songs: Daughtry’s “Over You” (#7), Colbie Caillat’s sweet “Bubbly” (#9), ans Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer” (#18).

MP3 | Daughtry - Over You
MP3 | Colbie Callait - Bubbly
MP3 | Finger Eleven - Paralyzer

  •  The bottom half of Top 40 Radio is embedded with true gems, naturally. Thank Allah Alternative Rock is finding it’s place in Pop Radio (Daughtry is #8, you serious?!). Even though they are in the bottom half, this could be a slow, but steady movement of banishing songs like The Way I Are (#2), Apologize (#5), Crank That (#12), Bartender (#20), and Me Love (#24) down to the bowels of radio hell. These soldiers of alt. rock? matchbox twenty (How Far We’ve Come, #22), My Chemical Romance (Teenagers, #23), Fall Out Boy (I’m Like A Lawyer, #32), and The Last Good Night (Pictures of You, #36).
