Well, what can be said to try and convince someone that Jimmy Eat World has put out another amazing album? Well you could say that Chase The Light is probably the most overall solid and complete feeling album from the band in a long time if not ever. You could also say that it’s one of the best records to come out this year.
“Big Casino†explodes right off the bat into a song which should put your musical heart at ease, knowing that the band is back in a big way. The song holds nothing back and in doing so turns out to be one of the faster tracks on the record.
The first line in “Let It Happen†is “ There’s a ringing in my head, and no one to answer it… “. The line is one that if it came from any other band it would probably come off being corny or lame. Jimmy Eat World though is one of the few bands that can pull it off, and not even have you question them on it. “Let it happen†is a midtempo rock song that blends nicely with the two tracks ["Always Be", "Carry You"] that follow it.
“Always Be” is almost hypnotizing as its melodic chorus marches on towards the songs end. From the snaps that open the tune to the catchy chorus, the song should be a favorite among all the other hits. “Electable†will be, or at least could be this album’s equivalent of what “The Middle†was for Bleed American. The “ do do do’s †and the “ give it up †make the song, and tend to be one of the only things you remember later as you’re singing it in your head.
“Here It Goes†is a catchy jab at the music scene and all the people trying hard to ‘make it’. Despite it’s somewhat light hearted nature this song really could be one of the best on the record. The backing vocals and harmonies shine making the song just pop off the canvas. Everyone will have a song which they instantly connect with and I guess for me “Here It Goes†was it. The bottom line is the song succeeds at providing a good time.
Jimmy Eat World’s albums don’t close and end with just any song but rather they end with epic, life changing songs. Is “Dizzy†one of those songs? Simply answered, yes. Although it may not clock in at over 6 or 7 minutes, the intensity and urgency are there and the song gets
the point across.
In a year of good music, this may be one of the best albums to come out. (ap)

Why oh why is the new album so terrible? Lacking the catchiness of Bleed America or the heart of Futures, or even the experimental side of Stay on Your Side Tonight. It just sounds like a hollow pop record, ‘Here it Goes’ makes me want to be sick its so cheesy.
Oh and Fugliest album cover, much?

yeah, this album could definitely have done with a few more ballads or songs resembling Disintegration. Should have ran with the direction they were going with on Gotta Be Somebody’s Blues instead of songs like Electable. Be Sensible and Open Bar Reception would have given the album a better balance instead.

Where did the “loudness” go? One main reason I love JEW is their ability to blend harder songs like Bleed American, Just Tonight and Pain with great ballads like Hear You Me, Polaris and 23. In that respect I am pretty disappointed with the new album. Otherwise the new album is a solid JEW release and good for easy listening…

new album is too polished, imo. I like some of the songs, though.
I think the new album is wonderful. They managed to mature their sound while keeping that signature JEW timbre intact in their songs. Now they just need to schedule a european tour and I will be the happiest girl in the world!

The cover reminds me of Pear Jam’s latest album cover. I know they look nothing alike, but I get the same vibe with the two.
the b-sides “be sensible” and “take em as “they come” are awesome tracks
I’m just listening to it for the first time, and it seems solid. I have to agree with Kelly, though: I really enjoyed some of the harder songs on their past records, and so far at least this just isn’t quite getting there. It’s enjoyable, but I miss that edge….
I really enjoyed this album, even from the first listen. I missed JEW so much; I’m very, very satisfied with their latest. I do miss their Futures and Clarity days, however, this album is something even better. They are freaking awesome and I still love them. <3
This album as a whole wasn’t one of my favorites, because it lacked the harder, bleed american side, of jimmy eat world. However, it introduced some of my favorite Jimmy Eat World songs like Let it Happen and Dizzy. Overall i thought it was a pretty solid album, and I like all of the tracks except for probably here it goes and feeling lucky
