Alright, I’m going to say it. Pete Doherty is just so darn talented. Doherty and Babyshambles return with their second ablum Shotter’s Nation on October 23 (October 1 in the UK).
Upon first listen, it’s evident why Doherty is so talked about. Though he’s a tabloid magnet, he is also an immensely talented artist, whose lyrics are as good as anyones. Shotter’s Nation is Doherty’s best work since The Libertines era. The album, as expected, still has a hint of Libertine’s sound on it as well as some Strokes and Blur influenced styles. But in the end, the album is a very unique effort. Each song has a distinct sound accompanied by very emotional, personal and intelligent lyrics. The album’s first track “Carry On Up The Morning†sounds like a old Libertines song, while the album’s first single “Delivery†features a riveting guitar part and melodic chorus. Among particular album highlights are “Side of the Roadâ€, which sounds like a classic Clash song and the probable personal narrative about Doherty’s relationship with Kate Moss entitled “There She Goesâ€.
Other highlights include “Crumb Begging Bagheadâ€, “Unstookie Titledâ€, and “UnBioTitledâ€.Gone is the sense of depression that was on the Babyshambles debut album Down in Albion. Doherty’s vocals have greatly approved and he apparently has accepted the actions of his past. It’s clear he is using this album to express the emotional past few years. He is trying to mature, and vocally expresses this, singing in “Lost Art of Murderâ€, “She won’t take you back/ Said too much, been too unkind/ Get up off your back/ Stop smoking that/ Change your life, she just might change her mindâ€.Doherty appears to be back.
Well, at least for the time being. Let’s just hope for his sake that this great musician can stay clean long enough to take full advantage of his unbelievable musical talents. (ay)

shotter’s nation > down in albion
agreed
new album is fine… the album cover however is a different story
I’d take Shotter’s over Albion any day.
No way.Albion is the greatest
i think they’re equally awesome.
They’re WOW.
shotter’s nation is amazing
shotter’s nation WAY > down in albion.
I’m LOVING shotters nation.
I LOVE THE NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not sure if Shotter’s Nation is better than Down in Albion but I’ll figure it out sooner or later…. Lost Art of Murder is a great song.
I’m love Shotters Nation! Is amazing! ^^
“Carry Up on The Morning” just… rox <33
I listented to both album twice to compare and it’s fucking sure – No way is SN any better than DiA. DiA is an awesome record and much more powerful than SN. Yes, I’m probably the only one to be a little disappointed.
Oh I am pleased you like the album, I’m absolutely adoring it. Agreed on most counts here, but I honestly cannot decide whether SN is better than DiA or vice versa just yet…
Albion is a fine fine album of sprawl and mess with little nuances of pop songs sprouting up in just the right doses. Shotter’s is wayyyy to tidy and British sounding to be anywhere near Albion in quality. It’s a Steven Street album. Not a Pete Doherty album.
I can’t believe this review. I’m a big Pete Doherty/libertines fan and I was incredibly disappointed with this album. Stolen riffs… effortless lyrics… all in all a complete step-down from Down In Albion, which was a brilliant album.
To say this album is his best work since The Libs is ridiculous, where have the songs gone that talked about anything other than drugs?
Due to his drug taking…gone is his eagerness and excitement towards the music he makes and it seems, his incredible talent…
