If thats not an eye-catching email title, I don’t know what is. The first thing that came to my head was “who the fuck is Puppetbox?” Well thankfully Mr. Payne, Puppet’s guitarist isn’t an idiot and left me a myspace link to click. Let Puppetbox introduce themselves.
Puppetbox is a band. They are currently under the radar. In fact, both the radar and the band are unaware of each other. The band plays electro, rock, shoegazer, geek, pop music – and the radar continues to serve as ametaphor for bands that have made lots of money versus those that will forever be “emerging.” In case you were wondering about the name of the band, puppetbox is either a device to control the minds of the hapless proletariat, OR we actually have a box full of puppets, both are probably illegal in Texas. The band recorded their last album in Zamunda, the Chateau de la Prétentieux, and with the hottest Japanese producer, ??? in Tokyo.
Now that we know a bit about these three Brooklynites, lets crack down on this “better thab Vampire Weekend” thing. After listening to the mp3 left in my inbox, I have come to a verdict.
1a. Puppetbox and Vampire Weekend have nothing (at least in the evidence provided) in common in terms of music. Which leads me to my second subpoint.
1b. It was exactly what it initially appeared to be, one helluva email title.
This is something online promoters and bands must learn. To read blogs/elbo/hypem, know whats hot, and sell it. I must admit, I am a jerk sometimes and won’t even open some of the submissions I receive (sorry! I’m a busy guy!), but this one caught my attention and I’m glad it did.
Puppetbox describe themselves as “Post-Geek-Synth-Rock”, and that about works for me. The song I’m about to share is called “Kill You Dead”. Which explains a bit more why they chose to include Vampire Weekend -music blogs’ current baby- in their little email. I urge your ears to listen to this cut.
I sincerely hope to hear more from these guys.

I’ve never heard vampire weekend, but I’m sure vampires would not be into puppetbox . . . it seems like pretty catchy stuff though.
The video for “kill you dead” is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. I wish I were different too.
