If Linkin Park are this week’s prime exhibit of hopeless major label cynicism, the Sony-backed MGMT could be the antidote. “Time To Pretend” contrasts the grim, tired clichés of rock’n'roll (“Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives”) with the simplicities of childhood (“Playgrounds and animals and digging up worms”). So far so obvious, but what lifts this into revelation is the startling and original beauty of the music.
Part of the praise must go to producer Dave Fridmann, a maverick genius most famous for guiding Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. MGMT marry the ethereal spaciness of these two bands to a more direct, dynamic pop approach. They have beauty and brawn. Built on a growling Numanoid synth, “Time To Pretend” surges forward in layers of fuzzy sound and nagging one finger keyboard hooks, held together by gorgeous vocals that manage to be both dreamy and intense. Startlingly good.
