2007 might just be my favorite year for music releases this decade. Unfortunately, many, many great albums were left out of this list. It was pretty hard leave them out, but I couldn’t press the little blue “Publish” button without any of the following albums on the list:

pmaCAST #21: Looking Better, Shining Brighter Than You Do music The twenty-first episode of the pmaCAST is here. The new episode runs a little bit over an hour and fifteen minutes and features some of my favorite songs of the moment. I’m pretty confident that you all will like this one.

I’m going to switch up the way I do these because the plot hasn’t been the only thing taking a toll this season. I’ll still give you every week’s full playlist, but I’ll focus on the tracks that truly made the episode special.

Vampire Weekend – California English (Live)

Vampire Weekend California English (Live) listen Ezra is jumping on the auto-tune? Is this the Discovery influence coming to play? Is auto-tune the new trend in indie rock? These questions can wait, because you have to go listen and/watch Vampire Weekend perform a new track off their highly anticipated sophomore album Contra.

The track in question is “California Enlgish,” and I think I love it already. The energy Vampire Weekend perform it with is rejuvenating and refreshing. Within a couple of listens, you will be trying to sing along. Within 15 seconds, your toes will surely be tapping along to the fantastic beat. Solange Stillness Is The Move (Dirty Projectors Cover) covers The blipster of the Knowles family and Queen B’s little sister Solange took the time to cover one of my favorite songs of the year, and I’ll love her eternally for it. Her “Stillness Is The Move” cover is built one of the most recognizable Dr. Dre samples out there (yes, that funky, ear-bending “XXplosive” twang).

Major props to Pitchfork for finally dropping this one. I’ve been dying to hear it ever since Solange tweeted about it back in July! Listen and download to the cover after the jump. Continue reading →

Charlotte Hatherley – Full Circle

Charlotte Hatherley Full Circle listen You probably know Charlotte as the guitarist that has played with Bat for Lashes. At least, that’s how I know her. And I didn’t even know THAT until I saw them live. Either way, I was pretty stoked to find out that she has solo work because I assumed, if she’s played for Bat for Lashes — and I love Bat for Lashes — then I should love Charlotte Hatherley. If a+b=c, and a+ … blah blah blah–I failed to realize that logic doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to love someone. So what all this brings me to is that I didn’t really care for “Full Circle.” I mean, Natasha Khan’s vocals are so much better …

Animal Collective – Bleeding (Live)

Animal Collective Bleeding (Live) listen Animal Collective’s new 10″ for “Brother Sport” has been released. Buy the gorgeous 10″ slab of wax at Domino’s E-Mart. The single features every AnCo die-hard’s favorite Merriweather Post Pavilion track “Brother Sport” (or is it “Brothersport”?), backed with the live track “Bleeding.”

I Guess I’m Floating has an mp3 of the nearly-10 minute opus. While “Bleed” definitely sounds like it lives within “Bleeding”, I’m not sure you would call the two tracks one in the same. The track sprawls on for nearly 10 minutes, flexing Animal Collective’s sonic prerogative to essentially play what they want whilst making listeners feel like a lonely astronaut floating in outer-space. Better yet, releasing a live version of a track soon to appear on their December EP only reinforces the fact we all like pretending to know where they’re taking their sound but haven’t the slightest idea.

Free Atlas Sound Virtual 7 covers
Deerhunter’s Badford Cox wants you to download this virtual 7″ single, released under his Atlas Sound moniker, for free on his blog. It features a fantastic cover of The Five Discs’ “Doctor” backed with a track called “The Screens.” I didn’t really get into Atlas Sound’s last album, Logos, but these tunes really hit the spot on a miserable Hump Day like today.
