Rain Machine – Give Blood (Music Video)

YouTube Preview Image
I personally find it rather frustrating when a band member decides to launch a solo career but simply ends up sounding like the original band he/she was originally a part of. It makes me wonder: what’s the point? But of course, that’s the fan talking in me and we all know fans have no regard for musicians lives or feelings and only want our music tastes to be satisfied. Nevertheless, I can say I am satisfied with “Give Blood,” Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio)’s single off his solo debut. This is probably because I am a fan of TV on the Radio and, you guessed it, it pretty much sounds like them.

The music video features Kyp in what appears to be a non-seedy hotel room playing his guitar. But then he starts pulling bodies out from under the bed and things get only slightly weird from there with some clay creatures and (gasp!) hand claps. Download “Give Blood” below: Continue reading →

Arctic Monkeys – Fright Lined Dining Room

Arctic Monkeys Fright Lined Dining Room listenPhoto by Kirstie Shanley
“Fright Lined Dining Room” is one of the three unreleased tracks to back the Arctics’ second single “Cornerstone” off Humbug, which we were crazy about .

Alex Turner told Uncut Magazine that he wrote the song “one morning, quite quickly” adding that, “there’s something to be said for writing in the morning. At other points in the day you’re a bit more defensive. I saw it as a challenge to write something in a major key, but that wasn’t cheesy.” Truly profound mister Turner. You all will be glad to discover that “Fright” is not cheesy in the slightest. In fact, I think fans who purchase the single are going to be quite pleased to hear this little bonus. Delta Spirit – People C’mon

Delta Spirit People Cmon listenI was immediately drawn into “People C’mon” by Delta Spirit off their debut album, Ode to Sunshine. They have been compared to Cold War Kids, and with reason, but that’s not a bad thing in my book.

The piano melody about half way through the song combined with some “papapas” and “lalalas” by lead singer Matthew Vasquez make the song for me. Scratch that: everything makes this song–it’s simply just well put together. And hey, they’re the kind of band that uses trash can lids as an instrument. So if you’re into that sort of thing and don’t find it overly trite, then you’ll probably find yourself quite pleased and even have a new favorite band to keep an eye/ear/whatever out for.

Weezer – Viva La Vida (Coldplay Cover)

Weezer Viva La Vida (Coldplay Cover) coversI never fully got into Weezer. Believe me, I tried. I’ve had my share of singalongs and even a few attempts at playing some of their songs on guitar. I am, however, a fan of Coldplay, which is why I had to share Weezer’s live cover of “Viva La Vida,” mainly because they don’t ruin it and possibly even do it some justice.

The original is no doubt better, especially since Weezer didn’t really add much to the song, but I could see myself getting pretty happy to have them play this at a show. Sounds like their fans definitely were. Listen/download the cover below: Continue reading →

Penguin Prision – A Funny Thing

Penguin Prision A Funny Thing listen

This song got me dancing the second it exploded in my face, which is a plus in my book. I pretty much couldn’t stop moving some body part while sitting in my chair at my desk. It’s definitely got a very catchy and feel-good vibe to it. I can just imagine a large group of sweaty bodies dancing along to this at a club, all singing to the chorus of “We can’t ever be alone again.”

Chris Glover, better known as Penguin Prison (not sure why), is definitely onto something with this track and the previously PMA highlighted “Animal, Animal.” For a one man show, he’s got some well rounded music worth checking out. Continue reading →

[rating:66/100]
Right off the bat: my favorite part about The West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (other than it being named after a mental institution) is the eclectic mix of sounds that make the album, while maintaining a consistent overall feel. As I write this I groan at the overuse of the word “eclectic” (at least I didn’t say “epic”), but I feel it rather appropriate in this case. The album flows like a journey from a dark London club to uncharted territories. It’ll make you move, sway and sweat. In other words, there is bound to be at least a song or two that everyone can enjoy on this album.

Fans of Bright Eyes will find that they might not necessarily like Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. More specifically, they might find themselves highly disappointed in Outer South. For starters, seven of the album tracks aren’t even sung by Oberst. Not to mention that six out of those seven aren’t even written by him. But, those who were never quite fond of Bright Eyes might find something enjoyable with his latest endeavor. Continue reading →

Bishop Allen – Grr… Album Review

Bishop Allen Grr... Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:55/100]

I’ll admit that Bishop Allen’s sophomore LP, Grrr…, was my first exposure to their music. So this is a standalone review and I won’t be drawing any comparisons to their previous LP or countless EPs. For those who are not familiar with the band, it is comprised primarily of Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, but supported by a group of rotating members. They derived their name from Bishop Allen Drive in Cambridge Massachusetts, where the two lived after college.

I’m sure anyone who has fallen into the abyss that is “indie music” has at one point become rather jaded by it all. If you listen to as much music as I do, at some point you’re going to become a harsher critic simply as a means of filtration. You’ll go through band after band and wonder, “IS THERE NO ONE ELSE!?” As a result, I simply couldn’t get into this album because it didn’t add anything to music. It simply sounded like a cheap knock off of a bunch of other already existing bands. Continue reading →

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love Album Review

The Decemberists The Hazards of Love Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:79/100]

Whenever I listen to The Decemberists I can’t help but wish the album was accompanied with Spark Notes. Even though I’ve read a book or two in my time, sometimes I wonder what Colin Meloy really means when he sings, for example, “the prettiest whistles won’t wrestle the thistles undone.” Or what swans/cranes symbolize in his lyrics. From what I understand, the songs in their latest LP, The Hazards of Love, tell the story of Margaret (sung by Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark) and William (Meloy). More specifically their love story that is, well, hazardous because there is a “jealous forest queen” (My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden) involved.

Admittedly, I am a huge fan of The Decemberists, but when I first began listening to The Hazards of Love I was having difficulty absorbing it. For starters, it’s a lengthy album, which isn’t uncommon for them. With 17 tracks, the entire album spans almost a full hour. I’m not complaining though, just warning those who have yet to listen to it that they’re in for quite a journey and will likely need to listen a few times to take it all in. With all that said and done, once you do, I hope that, like me, you’ll be in an awe of sorts. I mean, did you ever think you’d hear a Decemberist’s song described as “hard rock.” This alone was enough to shock and excite me. Continue reading →

White Lies – To Lose My Life Album Review

White Lies To Lose My Life Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:68/100]

For those who aren’t familiar with the White Lies, they’re a three piece band from London. Early last month they released their debut LP—To Lose My Life. As with all new bands, it is often customary albeit unnecessary to draw comparisons in sound to already established bands. In the case of the White Lies I’d say it’s a cross between Joy Division and The Bravery/Interpol. Almost to the point that if you’re not fond of them you probably won’t care for the White Lies either. But let’s keep an open mind because I did and I definitely enjoyed it.

After a few listens I discovered that I can’t really find anything inherently bad about this album. Upon my first listen I found that it didn’t blow me away as something totally different or new but just grew on me. So as long as you enter with the mindset that you’ll be listening to a solid album that’s not necessarily ground breaking in any way, then I think you can really enjoy it. If you’re the type that’s constantly striving to find something different then you might be disappointed.  Continue reading →
