Right off the bat: my favorite part about The West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (other than it being named after a mental institution) is the eclectic mix of sounds that make the album, while maintaining a consistent overall feel. As I write this I groan at the overuse of the word “eclectic” (at least I didn’t say “epic”), but I feel it rather appropriate in this case. The album flows like a journey from a dark London club to uncharted territories. It’ll make you move, sway and sweat. In other words, there is bound to be at least a song or two that everyone can enjoy on this album.

Fans of Bright Eyes will find that they might not necessarily like Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. More specifically, they might find themselves highly disappointed in Outer South. For starters, seven of the album tracks aren’t even sung by Oberst. Not to mention that six out of those seven aren’t even written by him. But, those who were never quite fond of Bright Eyes might find something enjoyable with his latest endeavor. Continue reading →

Bishop Allen – Grr… Album Review

Bishop Allen Grr... Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:55/100]

I’ll admit that Bishop Allen’s sophomore LP, Grrr…, was my first exposure to their music. So this is a standalone review and I won’t be drawing any comparisons to their previous LP or countless EPs. For those who are not familiar with the band, it is comprised primarily of Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, but supported by a group of rotating members. They derived their name from Bishop Allen Drive in Cambridge Massachusetts, where the two lived after college.

I’m sure anyone who has fallen into the abyss that is “indie music” has at one point become rather jaded by it all. If you listen to as much music as I do, at some point you’re going to become a harsher critic simply as a means of filtration. You’ll go through band after band and wonder, “IS THERE NO ONE ELSE!?” As a result, I simply couldn’t get into this album because it didn’t add anything to music. It simply sounded like a cheap knock off of a bunch of other already existing bands. Continue reading →

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love Album Review

The Decemberists The Hazards of Love Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:79/100]

Whenever I listen to The Decemberists I can’t help but wish the album was accompanied with Spark Notes. Even though I’ve read a book or two in my time, sometimes I wonder what Colin Meloy really means when he sings, for example, “the prettiest whistles won’t wrestle the thistles undone.” Or what swans/cranes symbolize in his lyrics. From what I understand, the songs in their latest LP, The Hazards of Love, tell the story of Margaret (sung by Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark) and William (Meloy). More specifically their love story that is, well, hazardous because there is a “jealous forest queen” (My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden) involved.

Admittedly, I am a huge fan of The Decemberists, but when I first began listening to The Hazards of Love I was having difficulty absorbing it. For starters, it’s a lengthy album, which isn’t uncommon for them. With 17 tracks, the entire album spans almost a full hour. I’m not complaining though, just warning those who have yet to listen to it that they’re in for quite a journey and will likely need to listen a few times to take it all in. With all that said and done, once you do, I hope that, like me, you’ll be in an awe of sorts. I mean, did you ever think you’d hear a Decemberist’s song described as “hard rock.” This alone was enough to shock and excite me. Continue reading →

White Lies – To Lose My Life Album Review

White Lies To Lose My Life Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:68/100]

For those who aren’t familiar with the White Lies, they’re a three piece band from London. Early last month they released their debut LP—To Lose My Life. As with all new bands, it is often customary albeit unnecessary to draw comparisons in sound to already established bands. In the case of the White Lies I’d say it’s a cross between Joy Division and The Bravery/Interpol. Almost to the point that if you’re not fond of them you probably won’t care for the White Lies either. But let’s keep an open mind because I did and I definitely enjoyed it.

After a few listens I discovered that I can’t really find anything inherently bad about this album. Upon my first listen I found that it didn’t blow me away as something totally different or new but just grew on me. So as long as you enter with the mindset that you’ll be listening to a solid album that’s not necessarily ground breaking in any way, then I think you can really enjoy it. If you’re the type that’s constantly striving to find something different then you might be disappointed.  Continue reading →

Ana’s Best Albums, Songs, and Movies of 2008

Anas Best Albums, Songs, and Movies of 2008 best of 2008

Best Album

Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago: This album will never get old for me. It’s so simple and beautiful … or simply beautiful!

Girl Talk – Feed the Animals: I love nostalgia and so much of this album was a trip down memory lane … just fused with this year’s radio hits. Plus, anyone that can mix Jay-Z with Radiohead and not fuck it up deserves some cred.

MGMT – Oracular Spectacular: Is this not on anyone’s list?

Calexico – Carried to Dust: My first taste of Calexico and I was super impressed. I love the variety of influences and styles you hear in their songs.

Lykke Li – Youth Novels: It really didn’t take much for me to get into Lykke Li. I heard “Tonight” and instantly wanted more. It’s been love ever since.

I think it’s safe to say that one can’t properly critique/review an album without being familiar with the artist’s previous work (assuming they have any). So as I sit here with Common’s post-’94 discography stacked on my desk, I can’t help but feel disappointed by Universal Mind Control—his eighth LP released earlier this week. It’s not the kind of disappointment one gets from having high expectations, but one from having low expectations actually met. After Common released his 4th LP, Like Water for Chocolate, his style significantly changed. You could argue he became more “mainstream,” or go so far as to say he “sold out,” but it’s always easy for us reviewers to judge. After all, a brotha’s gotta eat, right?

Blender’s Top 33 Albums of 2008: The Good, The Bad, and The OMGWTF

Blenders Top 33 Albums of 2008: The Good, The Bad, and The OMGWTF best of 2008

Blender Magazine recently released their top 33 albums of 2008.  Although it’s by no means close to what my top 33 albums would be, I gotta give them credit for coming up with a pretty eclectic mix.  I mean, they cover it all from Erykah Badu, to Katy Perry to Girl Talk.  It is the latter’s presence on the list that gives us some comfort knowing they didn’t just focus on albums released on major labels.  And the presence of artists like Bon Iver and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks confirms that they didn’t just focus on mainstream artists.  Even old folks like Randy Newman and Al Green made the cut!  But let’s take a deeper look at the magazine’s choices:

GOOD: Girl Talk is #2! And really, who doesn’t enjoy that album? Even though I liked Feed the Animals way more than I did Carter 3, I gotta hand it to Lil Weezy for making such a major comeback and being #1 album of the year.  I still remember when he was a little twerp running around with the Cash Money Millionaires back in the ’90s.

Although Lykke Li is my Swedish pop star of choice, it was cool to see Robyn beat Katy Perry and Mariah Carey at #6.  I don’t want to hate, but Mariah needs to give up already.  Daydream was a great album, but that was a long time ago.

BAD: This list just might be a little too eclectic.  The variety makes you wonder if Blender sat down and grouped 2008 releases into different genres and categories, and then tried to pick at least one from each.  I’m definitely puzzled at Fall Out Boy’s appearance on the top 10.  I mean, people still like them?  Not only that but they beat Bon Iver and My Morning Jacket.  And what is with the Roots actually making it as #24? Don’t get me wrong, I love them, but Rising Down was pretty disappointing and there are definitely better hip hop albums released this year (i.e. Atmosphere, Murs, Common Market).

OMGWTF: Mettalica is back!? Just kidding. I’m not sure if they deserve to be the 4th best album of 2008, though. What’s really shocking is they didn’t completely suck! That and they beat Hot Chip’s Made in the Dark! Even more shocking is that country music actually made the list. Way to go Hayes Carll & Taylor Swift for filling the last two spots on the list.   I’m betting it’s Taylor’s good looks that got her on the list in the first place.

How does Ponytail make it on here as #18, or even Usher as #26, but MGMT is nowhere to be found?! I mean, C’MON!! I thought everyone loved MGMT.  And Coldplay didn’t even make top 20. Instead they got #22 behind Erykah Badu, Wale and Katy Perry.
