Cass McCombs WIT'S END

Cass McCombs’ first offering from the upcoming WIT’S END (it’ll be out at the end of the month) was the REC'D, wanderlusty, dusty-trail folk anthem “County Line,” and he’s followed it up with another gorgeous, nostalgic heartbreaker, “The Lonely Doll,” to tide you over until the record drops.

Piano and xylophone help “the Lonely Doll” feel like a lullaby or music box tinkerings; classically lovelorn, woe-is-me lyrics and a plodding, sing-songy beat help it feel like something you’d sing drunkenly with friends in a bar.

Its appeal lies in the toeing of that line, down the side of the highway under a big blue sky, dust blowing around your feet. Whatever it ends up sounding like to you, you’ll probably love it. Give it a listen.
