For feminist mentorship web project Shape What’s To Come, futuristic-by-way-of-the-1950s soul chanteuse Janelle Monae serves up a short and sweet slice of jukebox-y pop, appropriately titled “Shape of Things To Come.” You should put this on in your dad’s Buick or at midnight at the all-night diner down by the highway. Like Monae’s best songs, it’s timeless and impossibly catchy: her voice sounds played through a gramophone, but those toe-tapping drums and wandering bass are right up in the front. Take a listen and try not to snap your fingers.
