THE WEEKND

With his two thrilling, genre-busting mixtapes (which topped our list of best mixtapes of 2011) and the help of a famous admirer, The Weeknd broke out in 2011 in a really big way. Unsurprisingly, Abel Tesfaye has been making music long before he decided you should be high for this.

The internet, as it's wont to do, has unveiled two unreleased Weeknd tracks from 2009 – "Cure" and "Superhero". To be honest, we aren't even sure Tesfaye recorded these under his now well-known moniker. Not that it matters – these two early gems only subtly hint at what Tesfaye had in store for us, and like the old Frank Ocean demos that were surfacing all year long, they seem to lean more toward a radio-friendly tone. Hear for yourself.
