Where’s The National’s – Terrible Love??? :-0
I agreee! this needs to be put on the list.
solid list. keep your eye out for the new delta spirit album out in june, i heard some of their new stuff when i saw them live a couple weeks ago, definitely top 2010 song list material.
Note: The song that plays next to the #15 “Can’t Bribe God” selection is actually “Confetti,” also by 1,2,3.
Thanks for the heads up!
That song is also better
Agree with some of these, but I think you’re missing the boat on a lot of stuff out there right now. Would be glad to send you a Year’s Best list so far.
RT @pmablog: PMA’s Best Songs of 2010 [1st Quarter] http://prettymuchamazing.com/feature/bes…
“excuses” does not sound vital at all, and the vitality of youth should (and does) sound completely different, at least for me. “Excuses” sounds like bored hipsters aged around 30 in a bookstore.
Whoa, seriously? I wish I could “thumbs down” your comment. Excuses is definitely the top song of the year and extremely vital in 2010. I recommend the song, and the rest of the album a few times a week!
Excuses sounds boring and definitely would not have a place in any top songs of the year list. this entire list for that matter, has but 4 or 5 good songs.
Completely agreed. There is a bit of a tendency to overuse words like “epic” and hyperbole in general for what is mostly a very boring list. Still worth perusing as the ones that are good are incredible.
yeha yeah agree??? justin bieber in there???? no i love justin
agreed
MGMT – Flash Delirium
i cant read these RT comments. they’re gross. can they stop being counted as comments?
i second this
i third this
Fourth
GLARING OMISSION ALERT!
“Colouring of Pigeons” by The Knife
It’s catchy (although not traditionally), left of center, and epic. What more can you ask for?
“Hide Me” by The Golden Filter
Granted The Golden Filter does tend to repeat some of their tricks in their singles, I think that this is their best rehash, if you will. Even better than “Solid Gold”.
I also loved Gorillaz’s “Stylo” but I can live with that not being on here.
And I’m glad of the inclusion of “Window Seat”. Really beautiful song.
Why do you make us click through to the different postings instead of just placing the link right here? This site has become so user-unfriendly in the past few months.
The point of this post/list wasn’t to supply you with a ton of MP3s I’ve already posted on the site. The “FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD” link was more of a heads up — I’ve posted this MP3 in the past, and it’s still available for donwload — type of thing.
thank you share,
Zebra is indisputably the best song so far this year.
Also, site improvement suggestion: why do the twitter comments have to be intermingled with site comments? I don’t really give a flying f*** if someone retweeted a story. Makes the comments section unreadable.
this is why i almost never come to the site now.
retweets and lack of quality writing have made this site crap over the past 6 months or so.
everyone’s entitled to their own opinion
i agree with this one.
Great list PMA – yours are always my favorite. I agree with all or most of the songs, I do hold issue with some of the placement, but it’s no big deal. It’s still too early in the year to be sure about most songs.
I thought it was still way too early for a list like this, but after reading it and discovering 17 (I counted!!) songs I had never heard before, including that beautiful Joanna Newsom song, I am glad that you did make a list in April. I can’t wait for the quarterly installments.
good list. that’s all. won’t complain about Twitter. not my style.
This list is really eclectic, I like it. I can’t say I know all of the songs, but I guess thats the point of this blog to discover new music!
the rules for the list ruin any credibility that the list might of had before the list even starts
You forgot:
Owen Pallet
Los Campesinos
The Ruby Suns
Oh No Ono
“The High Road” – Broken Bells should have been #1. Overall though a good list aside from a few tracks that are just way too weird.
I think that The Ghost Inside is a better BB song
Ghost inside is an amazing song
I got a chance to see Freelance Whales a couple days ago, and for a group that is just releasing their first album, they are over the top. I now must listen to songs 1-10… because right now, your number 11 is my most-played song on my iPod.
Slide show from the concert:

(hope the link-drop is ok with your comment policy – if not, please feel free to delete with my apologies)
Great list! i think Chiddy bang is gonna make it this year:D
no Keepaway? I would take that EP over most the songs on here.
“All Day All Night” by Morning Benders is better than “Excuses”.
i love going through these lists.
ambling alp – yeasayer
rhinestone eyes – gorillaz
when the war ends – portugal the man
and the most amazing single of the year so far :
airplanes – local natives
agree with kayehbee. Owen Pallett doesn’t appear once in this list. what the hell? Midnight Directives/Lewis Takes His Shirt Off. easily top 20 material. mgmt also deserves a small spot at least for Flash Delirium. Mumford DOES NOT deserve a spot in the top 10 at all. Good Intentions shoulda been placed higher in the list, but top 10 is good enough.
other than these, good job PMA.
cool list. i really like ‘Rill Rill’ by sleigh bells. catchy pop summer song.
Most of these songs suck..
truth
opinion
all these songs suck balls
Definitely need a Gorillaz song on the list. I don’t care if it’s Stylo, Rhinestone Eyes, or Superfast Jellyfish, but at least one of the songs deserves a spot!
There are so many better Crystal Castle songs then Celestia. Fainting Spells, Empathy, Baptism, Doe Deer anyone??
Solid list! loving the inclusion of ‘excuses’. Although I think, Yeasayer’s ‘Madder Red’ should have been included.
http://twitter.com/KarrKarr/status/17582383210
Great list!! I’m glad I think ur a contra’s on it. i just love how different it is from the other songs they’ve put out. Just reading all the other comments complaining about twitter. I guess it’s annoying but all you have to do is scroll down and ignore it. I mean, there’s worse things in life than a retweet…
good list. Are you guys purposely not including multiple songs from one artist? I think Beach House (walk in the par), Yeasayer (madder red), LCD Soundsystem (whole album), Morning Benders (promises), and others could have easily made the list a couple times. How come nobody seems to love “Dance yrself clean” as much as I do?!
yes, only 1 song per artist.
and I think plenty of people love Dance Yrself Clean a lot… I just don’t think it comes close to the two mentioned on the list.
Yo,
In case you guys wanted to listen to these songs as one amazing playlist, i put them together for you with grooveshark! Enjoy!
http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/playlist/PMA+The+Best+Songs+of+2010+so+far+/31540201
Awesome man, thank you!
While I hadn’t heard the #1 songs by LCD Soundsystem…. I liked them a lot! I only had two different songs by them, but this might prompt be to finally buy the CD…

LOVE that mumford & sons is on here.
Mumford & Sons was solidly in 2009… not sure why it’s on this list.
Such a fantastic Top 50 list! My favorite song of 2010 is, without a doubt, “Flash Delirium” by MGMT. I was lucky enough to see them live at their first show of the “Congratulations” Tour in Avila Beach, CA, which was AWESOME (and the venue was on a golf course–sounds silly but it was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to!!)! That was also Tame Impala’s first U.S. show, and I’ll say that the number 10 spot is well-deserved. We talked to two of the band members while MGMT was playing and they were great guys–I wish more people would have given them more credit at the concert. I’m definitely looking forward to hear more from them.
http://twitter.com/IAmKyleLegg/status/17678540819
That’s pretty funny, I went to the exact same concert. I was actually kinda disappointed by their live performance, but they’re a great band. Tame Impala also released an awesome album this year
http://twitter.com/daniger
Good list. You missed a few essentials: Foals (Blue Blood), The New Pornographers (Crash Years), and Avi Buffalo (Whats In It For?). Personally, I enjoyed Vaporize more than The High Road from Broken Bells.
Balancing on the edge of ’09/’10 are Dan Black (Symphonies) and Cold War Kids (Audience), which were technically not available in the US in physical form until 2010. More obscure, but still excellent, were Brasstronaut (Slow Knots) and the entire Darwin Deez self-titled album (which is more of a guilty indulgence).
Great list, as always. You have great taste in music.
So, DOM is composed of people who take out loans they can’t afford to pay back (making loans for responsible people more expensive) and don’t pay taxes (putting the burden yet again on responsible people)?
Hipsters suck so very, very bad.
It’s worth mentioning the majority of this fucking music is synth-driven low fi airy voiced crap.
And Chiddy Bang was terrible in concert.
Great list but you forgot, How to Destroy Angels “The Space in Between”.
http://twitter.com/IAmKyleLegg/status/17678540819
“Flash Delirium” is definitely one of my favorite songs of the year. I went to the first show of MGMT’s “Congratulations” Tour at Avila Beach, and they were amazing, as usual. That first night of the tour was also Tame Impala’s first concert in America—they. were. fantastic! I got the album just before the show to hear some of their songs, and they sounded great live. They definitely deserve that Top Ten position on this list. Another song that I have been bingeing lately is of Montreal’s “Coquet Coquette”. WHAT AN EARGASM!!!!! It is so great! I cannot wait for their new album!
BRILLIANT LIST
100% agree with the top 10
Your list has some new discoveries, thank you. The list is a little breathy.. like the indes just can’t get enough coffee to quite allow themselves to enjoy the day. Please post your top 10 inde but danceable music so I can discover some new folks that actually know how to play the drums or get their groove on.
Favorite for the year (subject to change) LCD Soundsystem’s “Dance Yrself Clean”, followed by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “Beat The Devil’s Tattoo”, followed by
The National’s “Lemonworld”, Joe Pug’s “The Sharpest Crown” and
I like Tame Impala “Solitude is Bliss”, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” by Meantooth Grin, “Tocata” by Jason Rivas simple but fun, and “Stole My Heart” by Little and Ashley. Honorable mention to last year’s “I’m So Sick” by Flyleaf and obscure progressive metal band The Xone http://progressive-metal-xone.blogspot.com/

This is a really solid list!
Hey man cool list.
Give BTSTU by Jai Paul a listen if you havent already.
My song of the year.
Peace.
I can only agree with the list halfway. I think “Baptism” has been Crystal Castles’ best song so far. LCD Soundsystem and The Morning Benders are good choices for 2010, but seem weak when compared to other years.
these suck…jkjk they rock!
I tweeted here: http://twitter.com/KelliFRobinson/status/22216686761. Cool contest!
These songz suck!!!!!!!>:/
some pretty terrible choice here, especially the top 10.
wow!!…amazing choice….
these song are F#&* listen to eminem, t-pain, lil wayne, jay-z, flo rida, ludacris and mims noob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol @ mims….love a good joke post thrown in the mix
again these songs suck shit you motherf%#$&%*&%%^%&^ ^&%^&%& ^&*^&*^* ^*&^&U^ &*(^&*&*( NM&*&* &*&* HI*&^*& &^&*^&*
Best Song of 2010 ? Has to be Let The Sunrise Say Goodbye from HWY-99 … check it out on iTunes & YouTube ~ ***** / 5 stars
LOVE to see teenage crime – adrian lux on here 2010!
Love the list! When will Part III be posted?
How isn’t The Naked And Famous on this list?
agree.
MISSING: Foster The People – Pumped Up Kicks
agreed! incredible song.
Great list, some listed were new to me, and I’m thrilled to hear them all. Though I was surprised to see Cee-Lo Green on the top 10, hmm I may have to listen to this, again.
dude…. love lust by king charles, and fighting smiles by jonquil. what happened.
Wheres Bloc Party’s new single One More Chance definitely deserves a spot on this list!!!
This list: a big, fat yawn. How boring. Flying Lotus is on there, at least.
Where’s Flying Lotus’ “Do the Astral Plane”? I think that is the best track off of Cosmogramma.
Here’s the deal, Luis.
I think we basically have the same artists all through here, but our song selection is almost always different.
I’da gone with White Sky over think ur a contra, Shutterbugg instead of fo yo sorrows, World News or Cubism Dream instead of Sun Hands, The Ghost Inside instead of Vaporize, Let Go instead of My Way, and DEFINITELY Get Real Get Right, The Age of Adz, or Too Much instead of All Delighted People. (I RLLY like the new Sufjan)
Your Janelle, Gorillaz, Yeasayer, and Cee-lo picks are DEAD ON, though. Excellent, all of them.
I made a Spotify playlist with most of the songs, just in case anyone’s interested: http://open.spotify.com/user/uniquebcnchick/playlist/6W9kd0ye3W8f5tWgoSH5wO
Great list, BUT…
Nothing from Broken Social Scene???
Plants & Animals???
The Black Keys???
The New Pornographers???
Maximum Balloon???
Nas & Damien Marley???
Tom Petty???
Hello!!! These guys put out some of the best music of the year!!!
You better check yourself before you wreck yourself, fool!!
~swr
I love about half these songs. many are out of order. where the fuck is the top 5 “caribou – odessa” song? where is diplomat’s son? Local Natives – Airplanes? Tame Impala – Soltitude is Bliss? There shoudl be at least 2 Tame Impala songs. LCD Soundsystem should never have a song in the top 10 this year. Arcade Fire – Rococo? Interpol – Lights? Morning Benders – Excuses?
I agree with a lot of songs on here, but you put a lot of garbage in as well. Das Racist? that song has some of the worst lyrics. I won’t get into others, but you gotta learn how to really take into consideration more things when choosing these songs.
I notice you also stay away from more popular artists. Don’t be afraid of Arcade Fire, or VW etc. just cause they’re popular.
I take part of that back, forgetting that 3 bands i mentioned were on the last page, which i forgot to get to
Commentor’s, NOBODY cares about your favorite song or band that didn’t make the list. NOBODY. Stop commenting on PMA’s list because you think you’ve got the greatest music taste ever. You don’t, you suck, shut f*ck up. Thanks.
where’s “pumped up kicks”by Foster the People?
Wow.. this list really blows… like maybe 2 of those songs belong here. Try and see what the world thinks is the best, not just your region or yourself
The number one spot would be most aptly taken by LCD (I Can Change) / Janelle Monae for Cold War, but where’s Dancing on My Own by Robyn? Far better than C.W.Y.G.O., I mean its already a classic !
Where is Sara Bareilles’ King of Anything????????!?!!??
I def think this list needs to be revised to include a few songs off of the new Kanye Album, My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy.

Here’s our top 10, with instructions on how to win $10 from Sam Ash Music Stores. http://bit.ly/g9w3nH
Would urge any fans of groups like Beach House, those into melancholic but beautifully melodic music to seek out Dark Dark Dark’s ‘Wildgo’ album. And if I was forced to pick a favourite track, ‘Robert’
No “POWER”? by Kanye?
We chose “Runaway” as Kanye’s track. We tried to keep it to one song per artist as our only rule. If you notice, under some songs we included a note that reads “Proxy for…”. Under “Runaway,,” we acknowledge that the song is also a proxy for other outstanding tracks from Kanye West, including POWER and MONSTER.
Really? Not one National song, even though it was far and away one of the best albums of the year.
We did rank The National’s “Conversation 16″ in our Top 20. Are you sure you looked through the whole list?
just a little upset that O.N.E. and Excuses got pushed down, because those were 2 of my favorite tracks of 2010 while Not in Love by Crystal Castles is a cover… I just don’t think that’s fair. Just a little dissapointed
Much better list than the Top Albums of ’10. I have the same favorite song of the year and loved the inclusions of “Zebra” & “All Delighted People.”
Some songs that I would rank in my top 20:
-> “Some Kind of Nature,” “On Melancholy Hill” & “Rhinestone Eyes” by Gorillaz.
-> “Take Me Over” by Cut Copy.
-> “Cold War” by Janelle Monae.
-> “Keep the Dog Quiet” by Owen Pallet.
The only one I dont really like on this list is “Romans Revenge,” that song is terrible. Its probably the most annoying song of the year.
Tapes N’ Tapes – Freak Out
Tunng – Hustle
Naked and Famous – Young Blood
HoneyChild – Driving Song
Young Liars – Colours
New Pornographers – Your Hands (Together)
All missing!
Great stuff overall though! 2010 was a good year in music, this list reflects it.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES PMA IT WAS GOOD WHILE IT LASTED
No Chiddy Bang or Xaphoon Jones!? I hope you know you’re making me cry while working at my desk!
Well done! I have my whole top 50 up if anyone’s cares to look.
Just click on my name!
Love Cry by Four Tet is hands down my #1 song of 2010. Irrespective of comments above the word “epic” can be used to describe it, without question. Special mention to another great song too, Spanish Sahara by Foals.
I love Music and your listed music are too many to mention. Thanks for providing the list! I must search for it now.
I love Music and your listed music are too many to mention. Thanks for providing the list! I must search for it now.
Please quit wasting my time. Desperately seeking something worth buying. Eels from 1996 is the last thing i have found and i listen to the radio 4 hours at work. Music is shit, please help un-fuck it. I dont care what other people think, since i grew up with people who listened to meat loaf and now they think coldplay has merit. I don’t have time to wade through comments because they are worthless.
Give them the music, and they will come. RIAA must DIE.
Love, Marc
the good music is there. it must be. the 1960′s was a hotbed of excellent music. There is literally no end to it. The good music in the new millenium has the same chance i do in Hell. RIAA must die, die and again die. Those lox eating screwheads need to get the fuck out of the way.
Not one dime will they get from me until i hear something worth listening to. in over 10 years there has been practically nothing. When you are peaked at Ga Ga, the money stream croaks. I dont give a fuck.
Good music, money. Shit music, no money. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. For 10 years we have had shit music, I don’t give a fuck about your grand agenda. Good music will rise, corporate fucks are parasites that need to be dropped with a lit cigarette. Keep it up and cut your own throats. When the Aerican revolution comes we will be PC. I’ll listen to Johnny quest music first because Bozo the clown has better music then you..
the music is some stupid music ppl.. wat in the world r yall crazy.. i think r yall r becuz nobody listen to this music,…..yukkkkkk
What happend to Eminem???
