solid list. keep your eye out for the new delta spirit album out in june, i heard some of their new stuff when i saw them live a couple weeks ago, definitely top 2010 song list material.

Note: The song that plays next to the #15 “Can’t Bribe God” selection is actually “Confetti,” also by 1,2,3.

“excuses” does not sound vital at all, and the vitality of youth should (and does) sound completely different, at least for me. “Excuses” sounds like bored hipsters aged around 30 in a bookstore.

Reply

Colin April 4, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Whoa, seriously? I wish I could “thumbs down” your comment. Excuses is definitely the top song of the year and extremely vital in 2010. I recommend the song, and the rest of the album a few times a week!

Reply

JB May 7, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Excuses sounds boring and definitely would not have a place in any top songs of the year list. this entire list for that matter, has but 4 or 5 good songs.

Reply

bilbo baggins July 3, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Completely agreed. There is a bit of a tendency to overuse words like “epic” and hyperbole in general for what is mostly a very boring list. Still worth perusing as the ones that are good are incredible.

GLARING OMISSION ALERT!

“Colouring of Pigeons” by The Knife

It’s catchy (although not traditionally), left of center, and epic. What more can you ask for?

“Hide Me” by The Golden Filter

Granted The Golden Filter does tend to repeat some of their tricks in their singles, I think that this is their best rehash, if you will. Even better than “Solid Gold”.

I also loved Gorillaz’s “Stylo” but I can live with that not being on here.

And I’m glad of the inclusion of “Window Seat”. Really beautiful song.

The point of this post/list wasn’t to supply you with a ton of MP3s I’ve already posted on the site. The “FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD” link was more of a heads up — I’ve posted this MP3 in the past, and it’s still available for donwload — type of thing.

Zebra is indisputably the best song so far this year.

Also, site improvement suggestion: why do the twitter comments have to be intermingled with site comments? I don’t really give a flying f*** if someone retweeted a story. Makes the comments section unreadable.

Great list PMA – yours are always my favorite. I agree with all or most of the songs, I do hold issue with some of the placement, but it’s no big deal. It’s still too early in the year to be sure about most songs.

Reply

Jessica Elm April 4, 2010 at 7:36 pm

I thought it was still way too early for a list like this, but after reading it and discovering 17 (I counted!!) songs I had never heard before, including that beautiful Joanna Newsom song, I am glad that you did make a list in April. I can’t wait for the quarterly installments.

agree with kayehbee. Owen Pallett doesn’t appear once in this list. what the hell? Midnight Directives/Lewis Takes His Shirt Off. easily top 20 material. mgmt also deserves a small spot at least for Flash Delirium. Mumford DOES NOT deserve a spot in the top 10 at all. Good Intentions shoulda been placed higher in the list, but top 10 is good enough.

other than these, good job PMA.

Reply

bohs and o's July 2, 2010 at 2:35 pm

good list. Are you guys purposely not including multiple songs from one artist? I think Beach House (walk in the par), Yeasayer (madder red), LCD Soundsystem (whole album), Morning Benders (promises), and others could have easily made the list a couple times. How come nobody seems to love “Dance yrself clean” as much as I do?!

Reply

Luis Tovar July 2, 2010 at 5:53 pm

yes, only 1 song per artist.

Such a fantastic Top 50 list! My favorite song of 2010 is, without a doubt, “Flash Delirium” by MGMT. I was lucky enough to see them live at their first show of the “Congratulations” Tour in Avila Beach, CA, which was AWESOME (and the venue was on a golf course–sounds silly but it was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to!!)! That was also Tame Impala’s first U.S. show, and I’ll say that the number 10 spot is well-deserved. We talked to two of the band members while MGMT was playing and they were great guys–I wish more people would have given them more credit at the concert. I’m definitely looking forward to hear more from them.

Good list. You missed a few essentials: Foals (Blue Blood), The New Pornographers (Crash Years), and Avi Buffalo (Whats In It For?). Personally, I enjoyed Vaporize more than The High Road from Broken Bells.
Balancing on the edge of ’09/’10 are Dan Black (Symphonies) and Cold War Kids (Audience), which were technically not available in the US in physical form until 2010. More obscure, but still excellent, were Brasstronaut (Slow Knots) and the entire Darwin Deez self-titled album (which is more of a guilty indulgence).

“Flash Delirium” is definitely one of my favorite songs of the year. I went to the first show of MGMT’s “Congratulations” Tour at Avila Beach, and they were amazing, as usual. That first night of the tour was also Tame Impala’s first concert in America—they. were. fantastic! I got the album just before the show to hear some of their songs, and they sounded great live. They definitely deserve that Top Ten position on this list. Another song that I have been bingeing lately is of Montreal’s “Coquet Coquette”. WHAT AN EARGASM!!!!! It is so great! I cannot wait for their new album!

Please post your top 10 inde but danceable music so I can discover some new folks that actually know how to play the drums or get their groove on.
Favorite for the year (subject to change) LCD Soundsystem’s “Dance Yrself Clean”, followed by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “Beat The Devil’s Tattoo”, followed by
The National’s “Lemonworld”, Joe Pug’s “The Sharpest Crown” and
I like Tame Impala “Solitude is Bliss”, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” by Meantooth Grin, “Tocata” by Jason Rivas simple but fun, and “Stole My Heart” by Little and Ashley. Honorable mention to last year’s “I’m So Sick” by Flyleaf and obscure progressive metal band The Xone http://progressive-metal-xone.blogspot.com/

I love about half these songs. many are out of order. where the fuck is the top 5 “caribou – odessa” song? where is diplomat’s son? Local Natives – Airplanes? Tame Impala – Soltitude is Bliss? There shoudl be at least 2 Tame Impala songs. LCD Soundsystem should never have a song in the top 10 this year. Arcade Fire – Rococo? Interpol – Lights? Morning Benders – Excuses?

I agree with a lot of songs on here, but you put a lot of garbage in as well. Das Racist? that song has some of the worst lyrics. I won’t get into others, but you gotta learn how to really take into consideration more things when choosing these songs.

I notice you also stay away from more popular artists. Don’t be afraid of Arcade Fire, or VW etc. just cause they’re popular.

Luis Tovar December 21, 2010 at 2:16 pm

We chose “Runaway” as Kanye’s track. We tried to keep it to one song per artist as our only rule. If you notice, under some songs we included a note that reads “Proxy for…”. Under “Runaway,,” we acknowledge that the song is also a proxy for other outstanding tracks from Kanye West, including POWER and MONSTER.

Much better list than the Top Albums of ’10. I have the same favorite song of the year and loved the inclusions of “Zebra” & “All Delighted People.”

Some songs that I would rank in my top 20:
-> “Some Kind of Nature,” “On Melancholy Hill” & “Rhinestone Eyes” by Gorillaz.
-> “Take Me Over” by Cut Copy.
-> “Cold War” by Janelle Monae.
-> “Keep the Dog Quiet” by Owen Pallet.

Love Cry by Four Tet is hands down my #1 song of 2010. Irrespective of comments above the word “epic” can be used to describe it, without question. Special mention to another great song too, Spanish Sahara by Foals.

Please quit wasting my time. Desperately seeking something worth buying. Eels from 1996 is the last thing i have found and i listen to the radio 4 hours at work. Music is shit, please help un-fuck it. I dont care what other people think, since i grew up with people who listened to meat loaf and now they think coldplay has merit. I don’t have time to wade through comments because they are worthless.
Give them the music, and they will come. RIAA must DIE.

Love, Marc

the good music is there. it must be. the 1960′s was a hotbed of excellent music. There is literally no end to it. The good music in the new millenium has the same chance i do in Hell. RIAA must die, die and again die. Those lox eating screwheads need to get the fuck out of the way.
Not one dime will they get from me until i hear something worth listening to. in over 10 years there has been practically nothing. When you are peaked at Ga Ga, the money stream croaks. I dont give a fuck.

Good music, money. Shit music, no money. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. For 10 years we have had shit music, I don’t give a fuck about your grand agenda. Good music will rise, corporate fucks are parasites that need to be dropped with a lit cigarette. Keep it up and cut your own throats. When the Aerican revolution comes we will be PC. I’ll listen to Johnny quest music first because Bozo the clown has better music then you..
