It’s weird…if you go back to those old Star Search/Kids Incorporated vids (shut up, you’ve seen them too) her voice is great! I have a long-standing theory that her vocal coach not only ruined her, but ruined every female singer since. They all oversing in this weirdly vulnerable, breathy, closed-throat kind of way.

But hey, Brit’s songs are catchy, the production values are great, you can dance to the tunes…what’s not to like? Also, Toxic is hands down the best pop song since Good Vibrations.

Okay, u.r.a.z., I did not call her talentless. I said she was a sorta talented singer. Go ahead, read that paragraph again. I said: “a sorta talented singer from Louisiana…” Not great, just good. Don’t shoot the messenger here… Britney’s music isn’t ground breaking. It’s not that influential (in a technical sense), and she doesn’t have an amazing voice. Catchy? Sure, but if you’re here to tell me about Britney’s unparalleled singing talent, you’ve got the wrong guy. I recognise the skills… I know she’s sold a ton of records, but singing is not the strongest card in her hand, and I seriously doubt her ability to sustain her career with it alone. Fortunately for her, when your core audience is built on the dollars of adolescents, there is much, much more to selling pop music than voice strength (If you don’t believe me ask Ace of Base, the Spice Girls, or Hootie & the Blowfish). What I’m saying is that I agree with you and Luis when you cite her performing and ability to entertain as unparalelled talents, but as for pure singing talent… I’m sticking with sorta.

And Luis: Cirque de Soleil / Spears collaboration? That would be pretty cool.

Yep, i cringed when I ran an article that called Britney “sorta-talented”. I’ve seen her live a couple of times and it has been phenomenal. It is hard to care that she is lipsyncing when she’s moving like she does.

Plus the theatrics of her shows are state of the art. The costumes? Beautiful and provocative. It’s a Cirque de Soleil sized show.

Hey wouldn’t that be a cool touring collaboration?

I spent a lot of time hating her and then when i saw her full-on trainwreck i just started to feel for her,she seemed more human to me then than when she was the perfect girl (virgin or not), seems to me she shed that mask of perfection, the fame, the money all that crap turned against her, i felt a lot of compassion through out all that, but hmm, the appeal? i really don’t know what it is but she is captivating, her voice is so-so, but she’s a TERRIFIC dancer, she just embodies fun! plus, her songs are CATCHY; and i dont think she’s ever gonna go away, aging is nothing if she can keep things “interesting”, more marriages will come, “true love” and whatnot, she’ll fake an accent, etc… she’s got the madonna factor

I mostly agree with what you’re saying, but I think you’re missing the fact that Britney Spears has a true talent; she’s a performer. Yes, people love her for being all-American. Yes, people love her for being a sex symbol. But you forget that she’s a performer like no other. She’s a true entertainer. Her career has all the potential in the world as long as she continues to have that passion for entertaining. But of course, people like to call her talentless and not take into consideration that this, as you called her, “sorta-talented” girl has old over 80 million records WORLDWIDE, where people don’t care about her all-American appeal, but about her talent.

I just shake my head when I see Britney stories pop up. I’m so tired of everyone’s fascination with her. It’s all of the drama that keeps her afloat–her evolution (even though she had to descend to hell throughout it) is her bread and butter. Without the morphing, she would have faded to oblivion. It’s pretty sad what the quest for fame (and pleasing an increasingly dissatisfied world) can do to a kid.
