I’ve been asked by friends, relatives, co-workers, and even professors, “what is Twitter?” My reply usually begins with “You know how on Facebook when you enter your status…” and usually receive an eye roll or look of confusion from the person I’m speaking with. I spend the next ten minutes talking about sharing photos and information vs. sharing 140-character thoughts and still haven’t seemed to convince anyone of the relativity of either site. Thankfully, I’m not the only one. Since the start of the year, the Facebook vs. Twitter argument has grown, and everyone is wondering whether the two can co-exist in the social networking world. So if you’re sitting there wondering why you should have one or the other, continue reading….

Being that I’ve been a Facebook user for almost five years now, it’s hard to let go of everything it’s given me. Photo sharing, connecting with old friends, endlessly updating my status, and using it as a procrastination tool when I’ve given up on term papers due the next morning—all of these things are great memories of my social networking past (I’m not even going to mention Myspace). And up until recently, I had generally ignored its very-close-to-takeover rival known as Twitter. Since then my life has been ridden with a vocabulary of words beginning with “tw” and an overuse of the “@” symbol that I never thought I’d encounter again after giving up on e-mail. However, Facebook still holds a special place in my heart. So what do I do now?

There is no real telling who’s going to win this battle. Each service is looking to enhance online communication, and they are succeeding amazingly with their approach. Facebook is capitalizing on its ability to (recently) attract every demographic to its site and find their entire graduating class from 20 years ago. They also have clout. They’ve been serving college students and now anyone with an e-mail address for years, boasting themselves as the “mature” Myspace. Since the start, including just weeks ago, they have continued to update their layout to the dismay of most of their users (who ironically still use Facebook), and remain the most popular social networking site on the internet (Myspace is #2, Twitter #3).

Twitter allows people to post their thoughts, feelings, or experiences in a single status update of 140 characters or less (known as “microblogging”), forcing them to cumulate all of their thoughts into one single sentence and revolutionizing the way we tell people about our lives. You can synch your Facebook up to receive your Twitter updates. You can update your Twitter with new blog posts. They’ve also remained the same over the short time they’ve been online, with only minor changes and the introduction of SMS updating, which has only made the service more exciting. (They also turned down a $500 million buyout offer from Facebook!) And while many argue that Facebook has solved the problem by including a “What are you doing?” (now “What’s on your mind?”) stream of status updates on one’s profile, the two services continue to exist separately and hold common users who (like myself) aren’t willing to choose between the two platforms.

You’re probably still wondering what you should do. You’ve probably received at least 10 tweets since you started reading this. You’ve probably also looked at your Facebook and thought about the idea of deletion. My advice? Keep them both. They are each exciting in their own right, and neither of them, at this point, is worth getting rid of. Until one of them finds a way to out-do the other, they’re going to be around for quite some time. So keep on tweeting your little hearts out and don’t forget to accept your grandmother’s friend request so she’ll stop poking you.

Lastly, what do you all think? Are any of you strictly Facebook/strictly Twitter, or are you all straddling the line, too?

Like you, I use both Facebook and Twitter and I love them both. They’re both so intrinsically different from the other that you can’t use one to the exclusion of the other.

I don’t like Facebook because I feel like privacy is a struggle and almost impossible to accomplish on Facebook. It seriously takes about 8 different pages and probably over 24 clicks to disable all of the private/public settings. For that reason, I’ll say Twitter. Plus, I feel like an artist/band can use Twitter to talk directly to fans in a way that Facebook, MySpace, etc. doesn’t work.

…but if I just want some ex-girlfriend to find me, I guess Facebook is the way.

i’ve tried to be a twitter-er (forgive me if i misused the ‘tw’) & have failed miserably…for the life of me i just don’t understand what’s so exciting about it.

I used to love facebook, but now I just go to look at pictures from other peoples’ lives. Other than that, it’s pretty worthless. Twitter, on the other hand, is awesome. Especially if you follow some good people.

I’m confused as to why this is even a debate. Twitter strikes me as the last self-absorbed refuge of those too lonely to actually stalk others, so they imagine that they are worth stalking. What happened to hobbies like stamps, comics, kites, or starting a “legitimate” blog (“legitimate” and “blog” should not be really used in the same sentence, sorry) Facebook is infinitely customizable and can be used for any purpose whereas Twitter is based on the premise that your flatulent thoughts are worth my time. The concept of Twitter goes against everything I view as sacred in human contact. A wise man once said “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.” Amen, brother.

(Sorry if this is all a bit aggressive buts its 2:14 am where I am. And its St Patricks day. Yeah, put 2 and 2 together and you’ve got me nailed.)

You don’t think “legitimate” and “blog” belong in the same sentence and yet you run one? Why is that?

hahaa i’m totally with brandon. twitter is purely for stalking, and so is facebook. at least facebook you can TALK to people, while twitter you talk AT people. it’s just a glorified website with facebook statuses, so you know people are eating lunch, watching tv, or something equally boring. i really don’t think there is one person in the world that’s important enough to constantly tell me what they’re doing. until i do, i’m not joining/looking at the site.

i’m totally with Randi being totally with me. Oh, and I am totally with Randi too. Well said.

Carrie, I guess I am just a flawed dude, filled with semi-logical contradictions. The concept of blogging is inherently self-absorbed and I struggle with that fine line between indulging myself and entertaining others. However, I think the legitimacy of blogging HAS increased a lot over the past few years and I am just slow to read the memo. I constantly strive to be a more open and accepting person, even of my own blog (but maybe not of Twitter users. sorry, gotta draw the line somewhere)

I dont use either, or any “social networking” website for that matter. I like music, that’s why I read this blog. I don’t care what all you “hipsters” use for your social networking, just give me my music. Leave this debate for a blog on which it belongs. In fact, for not using social networking websites, I am the ultimate hipster.

@Michael: what do hipsters have to do with facebook/twitter?

@Fridolin: I believe PMA is considered a Music/Culture Blog. (see the titlebar in your window)

i’m still undecided, i loved facebook as a means of keeping up with old friends, but i literally joined twitter yesterday, so i’m not sure which one i like more. i’m trying to get my family to all join twitter so we can update each other on our lives more since we’re all so distant and phone phobes…

I’ll be keeping my Facebook account, but I am really bored of it. The next big thing is going to have to be something completely different because Facebook have really perfected the site.

I would rather use twitter than facebook. And now I even prefer myspace. Facebook’s exterior is so dull, it’s always the same. Problem is that none of my friends have latched on to twitter yet, so I’ll be sticking with Facebook until then.
