April 2012: Best Albums (3 of 4)
Jack White – Blunderbuss
From our review: As much as I want to sing praises to Jack White’s expert musicianship and inventive lyricism, my admiration for Blunderbuss is rooted in sensation. Why overthink music this marvelous? Blunderbuss’ best tracks demand that you stop, listen, and experience them. Hell, the entire album demands it.

Chromatics – Kill For Love
From our review: Every song presented before us is a film unto itself. It’s all there. Some more obvious than others. Even the sublime ones beg for visual conjecture. But there’s no aimless guesswork here. Heart strings and brain cells swaying in concert with a masterful conductor.

Spiritualized – Sweet Heart Sweet Light
From our review: On Sweet Heart Sweet Light J. Spaceman forced himself to not write off traditional melody as the bane of rock n roll. Instead what we hear is hints of classic vinyl (Captain Beefheart, Link Wray) slightly warped and rendered through the “space rock” sound we’ve come to expect. What elevates this disc to magnum opus status is the best parts are unexpected — and gigantic.
Stream: “Hey Jane”
Death Grips – The Money Store
From our review: Every sonically-challenging act in history has its fair share of lovers and haters, but Death Grips seem to attract a particularly passionate flock of the former, jumping to declare each new release the Most Important Thing In Music. The Money Store is no different, and with fairly good reason… The Money Store shifts paradigms.
Stream: “Get Got”
Lotus Plaza – Spooky Action at a Distance
From our review: It’s a mark of Spooky Action’s excellence that so much other zeitgeisty indie guitar pop feels incredibly one-dimensional and thin when held up against it. This is a record that manages to balance incredible layers of complexity with smart pop sensibility and come out sounding lush and instant, truly brilliant in both senses of the word.
