I believe that most music listeners who are into discovery and experimenting into different genres, whatever they may be, use genre defintions as simply a way to say that a band sounds like “___a____” so that they can reference other bands they like who may also sound like “____a____” in hopes of forming the most basic of ideas about whether they “may” like a certain band or not. Genres have become so fluid that it seems either arrogant or just plain silly to attempt to pin certain bands down and presume that the description given can always completely, succinctly describe their sound. Genres can be useful when learning or exploring but are rarely the “be all, end all” of any one sound. Like any tool, it all depends on how one uses it.

nice post. did you know how pandora generates all that information? they have a bunch of musically-minded people sitting in a room listening to music all day, and categorizing it by the attributes you mention. then all the data gets fed into a central computer, which end ups with an objective picture of the entire landscape of music – at least, as objective as the people generating the ratings…

I just keep to the basic genres, but that’s only because iTunes special genre cover art is only for the basic genres listed in number 1.

I’ve always looked at genre defining in music much like I have classifying art–it’s purely academic. Naturally, as humans, we have adopted it for ourselves because we love to label and group things, but I think it originally stems from critics/music historians/etc.

This is why whenever I add music to my iTunes library, I delete whatever’s in the genre category. There’s an even simpler solution; just spout off a couple of bands you like/are comparable to the one in question.
