mp3: Blood Orange – “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (Drake cover)

Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes is no stranger to radio-friendly pop songwriting – he’s been producing and writing songs with Solange and Sky Ferreira – so it makes total sense that he’d decide to cover (“just for fun mate”) Drake’s surprisingly tenderĀ Nothing Was the Same ballad “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” Drake’s vocals take center stage on the original, but Hynes decided to conceal his behind a thick haze of shimmery, deft guitar riffs, deep bass thuds, and tropical synths. Might be a good break from your repeat listens to Drake’s version. Just kidding. Blast that shit.

Charlotte Aitchison’s second LP is a warhead, a sonic sour bomb that conceals sneering attitude and caustic kiss-offs beneath an initially shimmering pop sheen.
