Chiddy Bang is the Coolest Thing Since the Cool Kids

Click on the turntable on the left to listen to a continuous stream of music featured on Pretty Much Amazing - updated every day. For more, you can check out the Best Songs of 2011, or our Best Albums of 2011.

Seriously, these guys are the ILLEST! I’d describe them, but they seem to be the best at describing themselves: “Chiddy Bang is a four piece hip-hop/electronica outlet from Philadelphia. Currently attending their first year of college, they posses a musical maturity that is far superior to the teen-pop cliché. Chiddy Bang blends hard hitting lyricism from front man Chidera “Proto” Anamege, original electronica afro-beat and jazz influenced production from keyboardist Noah Beresin and drummer Zach Sewall, and additional production and vocals from guitarist Pat Braz.”

These guys are really in their first year of college? Damn. They can easily school half of the rap groups out there today. I tried to pick a couple of songs from the 5 that I have, but I couldn’t, so I’ll just share all 5. I suggest to start off with “Sooner or Later,” it’s the best way to ready yourself for the trip you’re about to take. “Sooner or Later” is an exemplary range of sounds that make it sound as modern as it does timeless. “Ice Cream Man” follows suit, but picks it up a notch by taking a couple of tips from the Gospel of Kanye by sampling the Tom Waits classic by the same name. “On Our Way” sounds exactly how I wish Weezy’s rock album would sound. “Fresh Like Us” starts off with a grinding electro beat that reminds me a bit of Gifted’s “Come With Me” and is filled with Cool Kids-like swagger and likability. I’ve saved the best for last, naturally. If you were to check out just one of Chiddy Bang’s tracks, it better be “Because.” This song is probably the most prolific hip-hop record I’ve heard in 2009. Chiddy Bang also puts Kid Cudi’s so-indie sampling to shame by sampling Radiohead’s “Reckoner,” so beautifully that even as a huge Radiohead fan, I’m a little proud. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

C’mon y’all, these kids have a nice polish for starting out, but this jank is kinda whack. Beats are too simple, which works for the Cool Kids but not for electronica. Choruses are too pop. Never liked Gym Class Heroes either, and if you think they’re like them but with better beats, beats were never GCH’s problem. The ideas are there, the execution is too bubblegum for my tastes. I hope they go more in the direction of “Ice Cream Man” and “Because” if they continue. It’s cool they like and respect electro, they just probably don’t need to be making it.

As for the article, “This song is probably the most prolific hip-hop record I’ve heard in 2009.” Prolific is not a word that just means good, it has a meaning and does not make sense in college. Get a dictionary. “even as a huge Radiohead fan, I’m a little proud.” What?

They have sampled so many of my favorite artists (Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, MGMT to name a few). Something I will play and tell my friends about. Talent + Sick Beats.

They kill it in every song and their sample choices are so solid. Plus, in response to LLiiness, they actually are “ripping up shows.” I saw them open for Kid Cudi at Lafayette a few days ago, and when they did Kids (the last song of their set), the reaction was easily as excited and intense as it was for anything Cudi himself did. They were great live.

Chiddy Bang’s music may be fun for a minute, but it’s so cheesy to use simple, blatant samples from current music to ride of their noteriety. Cheap and unoriginal.

I’m sorry but if these guys become any more than a flash in the pan, that will say how pathetic the current musical audience is…
