Told you. Today, Chiddy Bang premiered their best work yet — and I’m not just saying that because they namechecked PMA in the intro. It takes best work honors because I didn’t think Chiddy Bang would top their Radiohead-sampling “Because.” Their strategic and creative sampling one of the many reasons why I find Chiddy Bang so damn interesting.

I find that my favorite hip hop records sample some other song, usually old soul songs a la Kanye West. But since hip hop discovered Daft Punk via Busta Rhymes and the ever present and innovative Kanye West, it opened my eyes to a whole new world of sampling. The art of sampling songs that are still fresh in your mind works in a different way than sampling songs long forgotten. This new school sampling rejuvenates and captures your attention in a way a pitched-up soul sample doesn’t. It almost feels like a remix, but it is a lot more exciting.

I can count in my hand the songs that I find showcase the mastery of new school sampling: my favorites are Wale’s “W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.” Kid Cudi’s “The Prayer,” Chiddy Bang’s “Because,” Mickey Factz and Drake’s “Little Bit,” and now we can add Chiddy Bang’s “Kids.” A mixtape full of new school sampling would be sick, but that’s just an idea

Oh my god, Sick!! Also, on CuDi’s new album theres a song called “I poke Her Face” that samples Poker Face, that could be good. And on alot of Lil Wayne mixtapes (Da Drought 3!!) he raps over current tracks and completely kills it. Like Upgrade. Im so motha-fucking high I could eat a star ;-.D

And althoug I don’t love it and prettymuch hate Jim Jones I think that his freestyle over Electric Feel is pretty good, probably an honerable mention. So…should I start on the mixtape?

haha. I realized, after i did the post, that lil wayne’s mixtapes sample mostly new music.

i guess i enjoy it alot more when they sample my favorite music and not… “walk it out”

rcrdlbl released a benny blanco remix of D.A.N.C.E. a few years ago with some insane cameos including mos def and other i can’t remember. i can mediafire it if you don’t have it.

This song is awesome, really.. but I think its crazy that “Because” (which samples Radiohead!!!) didn’t get as much attention as this song.

ok so
1 just realized Wale’s freestyle over Roc boys is amazing, I would be crazy not to include it and
2 here are the rules: It needs to either sample a song, or be a remix with new verses or rapping or whatever, but no straightforward covers.

okay well i’m glad you vetoed pcd but chillin? why does the sample have to be new? i mean i know you guys are making the rules up as you go along but i think it should be included as long as the song itself is relatively new. who cares about the sample, especially if it’s a dope song from the 60s & david if chillin doesn’t count as sampling i don’t really know what does……
that’s my 2 cents.
