Cover Tuesday 15: is Back! Best Covers of Summer 2008 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

Moby – Creep (Radiohead cover): Last week I asked for a good “Creep” cover, and many of you came through! Moby’s cover of “Creep” was by far, my favorite. Another contender was Prince’s cover. Being there in the flesh to witness Prince cover Radiohead was just amazing — no mp3 rip can compare.

Ryan Adams – Wonderwall (Oasis cover): This is pretty fantastic, especially since I’m going to see Ryan Adams and the Cardinals open for Oasis later next month. I’ve been debating whether or not this cover is actually better than the original. Can a 90’s megajam that’s as cult-worthy as “Wonderwall” really be trumped by the likes of Ryan Adams?

The Kooks – Young Folks (Peter, Bjorn and John cover): Ok this is definitely my favorite cover of the week. The Kooks are a responsible for some remarkable covers. Remember them doing MGMT’s “Kids” or Coldplay’s “Violet Hill”? How can you forget.

Goldfrapp – It’s Not Over Yet (Klaxons cover): Goldfrapp is one of my favorite female vocalists of all time — can her voice get anymore perfect? I got some backlash last time I used this one, but hey, lemme give it another go: File this under the “better than the original” category.

Muse – Feeling Good (Nina Simone cover): The last time I heard a good Nina Simone cover was when the Arctic Monkeys did “Diamonds Are Forever” at Glastonbury. Can the Arctic Monkeys compare with the raw engergy of Matt Bellamy and his Muse? No, of course not, that’s crazy talk.

  1. Given that the Klaxon’s It’s Not Over Yet is already a cover of a song by Paul Oakenfold’s Grace, who’s covering who?

  2. Jim Bob

So yeah, I basically love you now.

  3. Lady Mama

    These are so good! Wow.

  4. Ohwee

    Loving the Muse.

The Kooks are just bananas! Seriously! Wow

    Totally agree.. Muse >>>>> Arctics

  6. Ben

I think Goldfrapp is covering Klaxon’s cover of Paul Oakenfold’s Grace

  7. Jaime

Moby doing Creep is epic! Ryan Adams doing Wonderwall is pretty lame.

Diamonds are Forever was Shirley Bassey wasn’t it? Sorry for being a nitpicker…

  9. Truman

AAAH ryans wonderwall covers my favorite song as it is :)
definitely better than the original but if it weren’t for the original there wouldn’t be the ryan adams version so,, i guess originals more awesome for that :p

  11. i actually wrote an essay for my english 1102 course on how Ryan Adam’s version of Oasis was superior to the original.

I actually thought the Moby cover was kinda crummy…but that may be because I’m so impartial to both Radiohead and “good” singers. The musical interpretation of the song was definitely interesting and worth a second listen…but Moby’s vocals are pretty rough.

    @Kristospherein
    I couldn’t agree more.
I usually love all the stuff posted on this site, but that cover of Creep has got to be the worst rendition/butchering of an amazing song.

Keep up the good work though, everything else you post is top notch!

No one shoelud cover “Creep” or any RH song for that matter (well, I liked “Exit Music for a Film” by Vampire Weekend I have to admit).
“Feeling Good” I play over and over, I found it a little while ago, it’s seriously amazing. And “It’s not over yet” is also fantastic, one of the best covers EVER but the original is what I fell in love with in the first place so, sorry, does not belong in that category.

  15. Diamonds are Forever was Shirley Bassey wasn’t it? Sorry for being a nitpicker…
Nathan, you’re so right, I’m just spacing lately.
