Dan Black grabbed everyone’s attention last year with his incredibly infectious debut single “Yours.” This song, with help of riveting synths and earworm hooks, landed Dan Black on the BBC’s Sound of 09 (along with Lady GaGa, La Roux, Little Boots, Kid Cudi, and Passion Pit) and major ups from NME, assuring him major success in his native UK. It’s just barely April, but even I have started double-guessing the BBC’s claims. I hadn’t heard a suitable successor for “Yours.” At least until now.

Where “Yours” was upbeat and almost peppy, “U + Me” slows things down, just slightly, while still keeping the powerful and moving synths. Where “Yours” was riddled with spiteful, in-your-face lyrics, “U + Me,” as you might have guessed, comes with lyrics that are as passive as they are endearingly naive and clumsy: “up with the winds, up with the skies, up with the fears, you know with you I’m fine.” Regardless of naivety or clumsiness, this string of words will undoubtedly go down as one of 2009′s memorable bridges. Listen to it, along with the rest of the song below:

He’s had a conflicted start to his career, but the interpretive talent Dan Black shows in his B.I.G. cover HYPNTZ has me hooked. Expectations are high, but he can take a few swings, and miss a few, if he cracks the code and produces remarkable art like that.

I like the feel of this song a lot and its slowed down tempo you mentioned. It’s got a nice pace to it.

I hope this song will live up to “yours” and “HYPNTZ”.

I had big hopes for him after those two songs, but “I love Life” and various other efforts haven’t really hit me as hard…. the way that he is being pressured by his record company with a deadline for his album doesn’t bode well either – he’s having to work in his basement by himself all day under pressure to get it out in time. As far as I can tell, that’s not the right conditions for making a fantastic album.

whoever wrote this article is a total moron. Referring to Dan Black lyrics as “naive and clumsy” is like calling Charles Dickens insensitive. If the writer of this blog gets paid to be the worst critic imaginable, then well, I can see why J.D. Salinger became the recluse he was, despite being one of the greatest writers of all time. Dan Black is no charles dickens, he kind of looks like Holden Caulfield would, but he’s no Salinger either. But he combines some refreshing lyrics with heartily dirty london streets electronica. Its easier to write a blog Luis, than be an anonymous blogger like you or me.
