Dark Was The Night

Click on the turntable on the left to listen to a continuous stream of music featured on Pretty Much Amazing - updated every day. For more, you can check out the Best Songs of 2011, or our Best Albums of 2011.

Dark Was The Night is a 2-disc, 31-track piece of work where some of our favorite acts (Feist, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, The Decemberists, Spoon, Arcade Fire, Cat Power and Sufjan Stevens to name a few) hope to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS. Even if you don’t usually buy albums (I think that should be your New Years resolution), make an effort to purchase this one. It’s full of amazing, beautiful music and it helps a worthy cause.

On February 17th, Dark Was The Night will be available in double CD, triple vinyl, and download — all proceeds / royalties are going to the Red Hot Organization, an AIDS and HIV charitable organization that raises money and awareness for projects and research. Naturally, I’m interested in making sure as many people as possible go out and buy this, and posting any files from this compilation may hinder that goal. But you can preview some of the songs on the Dark Was The Night Myspace page. They will be streaming one new song a day (started last Thursday), so check back regularly to listen to the music.

We can all make fun of ourselves right? Right. So that is what this is all about:

Disclaimer: This is a joke.

For all of you entry level “producers” who mash-up 800 songs to get hits on Hype Machine: You’ve just been served. Mason Dent’s been producing for 6 minutes and he just “treated” your asses like a God damned magic show. What you are about to hear is terrible. It was made to be terrible and prove a point. I will elaborate more on said point with a follow-up post, but for now just take this post for what it is; an experiment of “hype”.

Feist Vs. Daft Punk Vs. Justice Vs. MGMT Vs. Animal Collective Vs. MIA Vs. Santogold Vs. Crystal Castles – 1234 We Are Your Harder Better Faster Stronger D.A.N.C.E.I.N.G. Kids (Girls) Taking Your Money on A Crimewave (HMDIV “Crookers WOW This Rules” Remix) [via Hot Bizzies]

It’s a shame that this was downloaded over 3,000 times and made Hype Machines Popular list (#1)…

The Feist + Ben Gibbard – Train Song is a future classic, magical and surreal.

totally lost respect for this blog

calm down, douchebag. If it weren’t for this post I would have never heard it. I laughed my ass off and forwarded it to all of my friends. It totally made my night, I’m glad PMA posted it.

Seriously, Douchebag, you are a douchebag.

To be honest, Hot Biscuits isn’t “one of the biggest blogs around” and Luis’ intentions were sincere (“We can all make fun of ourselves right?”). There is nothing wrong with trying to keep a message or joke going. I’m sure you’ve repeated a funny joke to your friends before. I’m sure they respect you no less for it.

why did you not just link your blog to the original post?

I was streaming the song on my feed from hypem and was confused at the wtf crap I was listening. Thank god it was a joke, and its just sad if others fell for it.

Ados January 21, 2009 at 5:54 am

seriously, there was absolutely no point posting this. you really were just doing it for the hits. as if people didnt see hotbiscuits at #1 for the past 3 days.

Reply

Ashlee January 21, 2009 at 12:06 pm

It think anyone who’d post this would be just for the hits, even Hot Biscuits… but whatever, that isn’t exactly a crime, especially since I got a kick out of it. It’s strange that you guys care so much…

Ashlee January 21, 2009 at 12:07 pm

As if having this posted up here was some sort of nuisance to you… seriously people, get over yourselves.

Roger January 21, 2009 at 12:09 pm

ummm… why doesn’t anyone understand that this was a JOKE!

I don’t remember anyone bashing on Luis when he put up that “Modest Mouse covering the Killers” rick roll-esque mp3. it was legit humorous, you people are completely ridiculous.

Kyle January 21, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Couple of things…

1. love the comment battles right now
2. It was not for hits. Mason and I had a long discussion on the relevance of Hype Machine and how people are destroying its purpose. He decided to make a “song” and I decided to post it to prove that point. That’s all their is to it. If I wanted hits that desperately I would just post every big named remix that came into my inbox, but I don’t.
3. I appreciate that shout out though, thanks PMA

I love that people are accusing Kyle or PMA of posting the track to get hits, it was a joke about how stupid tracks like this generate hits. I never thought it WOULD actually generate hits.

pretty ridiculous that this was reposted. while it may have been a joke i think it would have been sufficient to have given the link. also, the allusion to hot biscuits may have been nice, but link back to the blog, give credit where it is due.

Roger January 22, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Are you retarded? I can see 2 links to HB on this post. The second one is massive and highlighted too.

Disgusting.

Haha. I just love the user feedback that we’re both getting from this song… Comments are priceless. Also, thanks for that even larger call-out to Hot Bizzies, totally unnecessary, but appreciated none the less.

I think I died a little inside.

I will never look at Feist, Justice, Daft Punk, MGMT, Animal Collective, M.I.A., Santogold and Crystal Castles the same ever again.

hah – that mashup sounds like a mix cd my ex boyfriend made, all compacted into 9 minutes – terrible mixing that sounds like a traffic jam – i played that mix cd in my car one day, a mate got in and asked if the radio was playing over my iPod… hahaha i wonder what would happen if i gave him this joke of a mashup and acted like it was really good ;)
