If you’ve seen Beach Fossils live in the last little while, you’ll probably know which one Zachary Cole Smith is when we say “the spinny one.” Dude’s whirlwind onstage antics match the dizzy, fervored energy of his project Dive (we’d say “side project,” but since Smith only works as a live member of Beach Fossils, Dive’s his real creative outlet), and that’s pretty neatly summed up by “How Long Have You Known,” the intricate, tightly-woven, Vertigo-spiraling first single from the band’s upcoming debut Oshin. It’s a track that sounds like a cloudy, windblown day – fuzzy drums, brilliant guitar licks – but Smith’s soft, reverby vocals really tug at our heartstrings.

Also check out Dive’s cover of Kurt Cobain’s demo “Bambi Slaughter” if you want to see the band get, surprisingly comfortably, into darker territory. Oshin is out June 26 on Captured Tracks.
