Stop whatever you're doing and listen Nicolas Jaar's remarkable two-hour long Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, now without BBC branding drops.

Over the last twelve or so months, Chilean New York native and Brown University student Nicolas Jaar's work has been some of the most emotive and creative music released. His debut album, Space Is Only Noise was a gem and one of 2011's best reviewed albums. The EP he released as Darkside in late 2011 was arguably stronger; it saw Jaar incorporate a sprawling approach to rock 'n roll into his signature painstakingly focused minimalism. The best of Jaar isn't only found in structured releases though (this mix is implicit proof of that)––he's often shared tracks that would easily be considered highlights on any number of albums just because they were burning a hole into his hard drive. Take, for instance, "With Just One Glance," a song he recorded with Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' kid, Scout LaRue, or this knockout remix of Shlohmo's "Rained The Whole Time".

Jaar's ingenuity is on full display on his Essential Mix. His knack for electronic music that moves your mind more than your soles, and his appreciation for and manipulation of silence have never been so evident. According to Jaar, “I’ve watched Jurassic Park twice in my life – once when I was six and the second time a couple of weeks ago. It inspired me to think about how gaps in time change our way of perceiving.” That might explain why he threw in an *NSYNC song in there. Also, big ups to Nico for using our #1 song of 2011, Beyoncé's "1+1."
