The xx are one of the last bands I would expect to release a Christmas song, but there is always something of a quiet longing in their music which seems appropriate for the holiday. “Last Christmas” is a cover of the 1984 WHAM! song of the same name, though it sounds like it could have been a bonus track on either of their albums. They did the cover for BBC1’s Live Lounge, but hopefully there will be an xx version of the wonderfully eighties music video that accompanied the original. Charlotte Aitchison’s second LP is a warhead, a sonic sour bomb that conceals sneering attitude and caustic kiss-offs beneath an initially shimmering pop sheen.
