Eminem’s Recovery is coming in late June, and “Not Afraid” is the album’s first single.

“Not Afraid” is as big as Eminem dares to go. The song’s blistering anthemic qualities, courtesy of Boi-1da, make “Not Afraid”. I have always enjoyed Eminem when he gets into that inspirational place, where everything that comes out of his mouth is Gospel. Boi-1da’s T.I. King-inspired beat propels Em and his lyricism to heights that nearly reach some of his older material, songs like “Lose Yourself” and “The Way I Am”, but it falls a bit short.

With The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, Eminem showed hip-hop that he’s one of the best that ever did it, and ever will do it. I don’t harbor any illusions that Eminem will somehow top this as he gets older. All I ask for is for Eminem to see how far beyond petty humor his talents can take him, and with “Not Afraid”, Eminem acknowledge just that. Here’s to hoping Relapse is 100% celebrity joke free.
