I’ve held off posting about because of certain reservations I had about them. Specifically, I can’t listen to the lead singer’s voice for a long period of time. But whenever I do sit down to listen to their album, Album, I’m not overwhelmed or blown away, as their 9.1 Pitchfork rating might imply.

I will admit, however, that “Lust For Life,” as well as “Laura” and “Hellhole Ratface” are essential and should be required listening in 2009. But take these tracks out of the equation and you are left with little to get excited about — a directionless Elvis Costello/Brian Wilson tribute album.

Totally agree with you, some tracks are really great, but some really aren’t. Let down of an album as a whole.

I think many other music videos could benefit from Girls’ example here. Just imagine if “Single Ladies” had some penis mic in it. The phenomenon would have been that much greater!

Interesting review. A friend of mine shared the Lust for Life song on Facebook and I thought it was pretty good so now Im going to check out the other ones you mentioned.

I also wanted to give a plug for a site I have been working on that might be useful to you and your readers. The site helps people share songs with their friends. My radeo http://www.myradeo.com is a social music site built on top of Facebook and YouTube. You don’t need to install or signup for anything to use My radeo. It’s free and easy. You can login with Facebook Connect. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks!

I think you’re completely right! Everyone seems to be taken by their story, and somewhat apathetic towards that fact that the music is just passingly good – not great.

Cheers for using the Elvis Costello/Brian Wilson tribute album metaphor.
I’ll have to give it a quick listen.
ESPECIALLY if Pitchfork gave it a 9.1 ;)
