Claire Boucher, the 23-year-old Montreal ex-art student who’s been making schizophrenic, Dune-referencing, totally irresistible dance-pop in GarageBand as Grimes for a couple years now, is probably the logical heir to that goth-dance baronetcy currently presided over by Zola Jesus and Austra’s Katie Stelmanis.
Like her fellow genre-defying, golden-voiced compatriots, Boucher’s music consists of complex layers of catchy, arpeggiating electronics, but leaves ample soaring room for her brilliant, candy-sweet falsetto. And nowhere is that more evident than in “Oblivion,” the hypnotic first single from her first real LP, Visions, which will drop January 31. It’s probably the catchiest thing you’ll hear today – Boucher’s electronic soundscape is impossible not to tap your foot to.
