Mediafire/Savefile it is

Click on the turntable on the left to listen to a continuous stream of music featured on Pretty Much Amazing - updated every day. For more, you can check out the Best Songs of 2011, or our Best Albums of 2011.

Testing out some mp3 hosts, I can’t possible host every mp3 on my server:

Santogold – LES Artistes (Grahm Zilla Remix) … zShare – Apparently, if you’re using FireFox and have that Adblock Plus plugin installed, you won’t be able to download from here (please whitelist PMA if you use that plugin — accept my ads. Bloggers gotta eat! Mediafire/Savefile it is music mp3 aside ) BUT zShare lets you preview the audio before downloading anything (though their ads make me feel sort of awkward). Oh and extremely slow uploading (SaveFile is 4x faster, MediaFire is 3x faster). I sort of hate zShare.

Fleet Foxes – Tiger Mountain Peasant Song … SaveFile – As far as downloads go: it’s fast and simple, though uploading is a pain, but I can live with it.

The Black Ghosts – Any Way (Fake Blood Remix) … MediaFire – The only problem I have with MediaFire is that their servers are iffy and the uploading process is usually glitchy.

Which works best for you?

I’ll stick with Mediafire and SaveFile for my mp3 hosting issues. zShare is officially out. I will also use my pmatunes.com server as well.

i’d say that all three suck equally. in terms of minimum exposure to sucky-ness, you’d be fine picking any of them. what happened to the days of being able to preview songs on the site before downloading? those were the days, i’d say. it’s more valuable to your viewers to try at the site rather than have to download and then try. not sure if this is possible w/out you hosting however.

either way, we are loyal readers. at least i am. isn’t this the only site on the whole internet?

zshare!

For music, it allows preview listening and is really fast downloading!

(By fast I mean, right click over the WMP embbeded window, open the properties, get the direct link and download it from there. It’s actually fast)

Zshare is nice because it lets you preview, BUT you always get lots of softcore porn on there which can, I imagine, bother some readers. It’s also difficult to download off there.

Savefile just frustrates me all around.

Mediafire is best for downloading, which I guess is the goal, so that would probably take the cake.

I like zShare and use it with Flashget + Flashgot plugin for Firefox, so when you have a zShare link just right-click it and choose “Download link with FlashGot” (I am not sure what exactly it says, because mine is in German, but should be something like that), then Flashget will open and all you have to do is to specify save location. No wait time, no limit – (at least I haven`t experienced any)

Flashgot:

Flashget:
http://flashget.softonic.de/

and I hope you already use Firefox :P

Let me know if it works for you ;)

Mediafire for sure. Zshare is shit, it takes way too long and crashes my browser on occasions. Drop.io is good too as someone has already said.

I like zShare because of the previewing.

Mediafire. zShare is pretty unreliable and with PMA I don’t really need to preview tracks! Drop.io is okay also.

Has anyone tried zippyshare? Or what about box.net?

Ever since I figured out how to get around the ad-block block, I can still use zshare. Just whitelist the adsense.js file and you’re good to go. Anyway, I can live with any of these systems but I prefer zshare and mediafire.

Personally, I prefer it if you Don’t use YouSendIt because the links expire to quickly…zShare works, but i gotta admit i agree with you on the commercials…
So for me,
MEDIAFIRE
is the best

Zshare sucks. Straight up can’t take that site anymore. I mean, if I have to I will, but one of these days it’s gonna put me over the edge – and do you want that on your conscience? I think not.

use zippyshare!
it builds a fast preview and has good download speeds!

Reply

Scree December 22, 2008 at 2:21 pm

I’ve got all three downloading at once, and MediaFire’s the fastest:
1. Mediafire ~ 38 kb/s
2. Savefile ~ 18 kb/s
3. ZShare ~ 16 kb/s

zshare just killed firefox while I was trying it. So I gotta vote for no zshare.

I use a userscript that adds a ‘play’ link behind .mp3 links so I can listen to them in my browser and enjoy them (or not, though thats rare with PMA :) ) without downloading them first. Both mediafire and savefile have direct mp3 links (eventually), so they get a thumbs up from me.

maybe to appease the people wanting previews, point them towards this: http://www.ghacks.net/2008/05/20/google-inline-mp3-player/ for the user script, or this: http://delicious.com/help/playtagger for a bookmarklet

zshare! who wants to download every single song without previewing it first?

Reply

Xander December 22, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Anything but Zshare. I know people want to preview their songs, blah blah blah, but you can always delete a song if you don’t like it. Real tough, I know, but we Firefox folk will be left high and dry if you go with that.

Luis Tovar December 22, 2008 at 7:40 pm

I think I’m going to stick to direct linking everything I can + SaveFile / Mediafire.

as for previewing: I think I’m going to reinstall Delicious’ playtagger. ive used it before and liked it.

sorry but zShare SUCKS major and I’m tired of it.

please mediafire!
forget zshare, it has waiting times….
mediafire is fast and uncomplicated!

I’ve been using Boxstr for a direct link, as well as DivShare, which lets you preview/listen just like zShare. I’d definitely recommend in instead of or in addition to mediafire for that reason.

zshare was legit until they started blocking adblock plus. and I’m glad to see im not the only one who has the zshare/firefox dilemma
