Before Justin Vernon was Bon Iver, all-around musical sensation with over sixteen and a half million plays on Last.fm, he was a stay-at-home musical genius and recorded and released Hazeltons in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Vernon made 100 copies of this record back in Raleigh in long paper sleeves with various nature photos and sold them at a local record store, or so I read somewhere online.

For many Justin Vernon/Bon Iver fans, like myself, this will be your very first taste of “Hazelton”, the gorgeous first listen of many. Listen to and download Hazeltons‘ titular track-mp3 here:

Justin Vernon’s music really is something else.

Does anyone know if this there were any other songs released with this one?

Hazeltons is 7 tracks long. That’s a mighty long EP. But not long enough album.

i’ve found the perfect music for my ears in Justin Vernon/Bon Iver. When can we expect a “For Emma” follow-up?

I just discovered recently that he had solo material from before Bon Iver, this song is amazing.

Discovered this album/EP thing about six months ago. It is really great. It is different from his Bon Iver output, but definitely shows him heading in that direction. I discovered Megafaun, who are the other former members of Vernon’s previous band DeYarmond Edison, and really enjoy their stuff and the soundscapes they build. I feel like you can hear a lot of that influence on the Hazeltons record. Lyrically though, it is a spot on effort for Justin Vernon. I’m wondering when Jagjaguwar will go back and reissue you it so that it can find a wider audience.
