Kid Cudi – Mr. Solo Dolo

Make sure to download the newest episode of the pmaCAST: Best Songs of the Decade, featuring our favorite songs of the last 10 years!

Kid Cudi Mr. Solo Dolo listenAt one point in 2009, I was looking forward to Kid Cudi’s debut album. Kanye promised it was a “masterpiece” and a “classic in the making” — immediately, thoughts of his own College Dropout came to mind. This high was where the bar now stood for Kid Cudi. Upon listening to A Kid Named Cudi, a person with half a brain would come to the conclusion that Kid Cudi would be able to meet the challenge of producing an album of College Dropout caliber.

It goes without saying (though I have said it again and again) that post-A Kid Named Cudi material has been less than filling. Material from the various mixtapes released by DatNewCudi has left a sour taste in my mouth, more often than not. I don’t know if it’s the sullen, depressing, and boring turn Cudi has taken with his new music or if its the uninspired production he’s rapping over that has left me so uninterested and disillusioned.  Unfortunately, this newest cut, “Mr. Solo Dolo” falls right into place in the worst kind of way. Sour taste in mouth ensues. Listen to it now:

Kid Cudi – Mr. Solo Dolo

I won’t say that it has all been bad. I will give credit where it is due. It may have taken a handful (or a dozen) of listens, but the Transformer 2 trailer-scoring “Sky Might Fall” is not that bad, it’s actually very good, albeit sounding very 808s and Heartbreak. Thank you Mr. West. But it wasn’t until “Make Her Say” (the song formerly known as “Poke Her Face”) that I was truly happy with Kid Cudi  post-A Kid Named Cudi.

So far, 50% of Kid Cudi’s debut album has leaked. This being: “Day N Nite,” “Make Her Say,” “Sky Might Fall,” and now “Mr. Solo Dolo.” So, technically, I like 75% of the album so far… there just might be hope yet. Expect Cudi’s debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day in stores on August 25th.

the guy who wrote this piece is a fucking retard. Dude you should seriously do some fucking research before you blurt out stupid shit like ’so far 50% of the album has leaked’. That is the dumbest shit I ever heard man. His album has 15 songs.

  2. Gregg

I understand that this guy is a critic on this website, but he is DEAD WRONG! Cudi isn’t about rapping to hear himself talk, he raps to send a message to the people about himself and the bad times he’s gone through. But he throws some fun in there as well. Maui Wowie? Fun song. Day and Night? Addicting. Sky Might Fall? More serious. Cudder can be whatever YOU make him. But don’t let this guy hinder your opinion on the soon to be King known as Kid Cudi.

that track is one of his hottest in my opinion, the cd goin b dope…yall gotta remember dis da same dude that came out with 50 ways to make a record, he’s doing dif types of tracks and dats wut makes his shit fresher den drake and otha ‘new’ artist

The great thing about Cudi is he has never claimed to be more than an entertainer. He has openly admited that his lyrics are pretty shallow (see Spin magazine), and he’s comfortable with that. I’m grateful for the fresh breath of modesty – Kanye has enough ego for both of them.

I can appreciate Cudi’s music for what it is – entertaining and diverting. Its not going to change my life, but Cudi himself never intended to…

…and whoever wrote this review here, no one knows the tracklist for the album, you dumbass. There are more than 8 tracks, haha. He’s been working with Swizz Beatz, and Ratatat did a track with him called “Teen Wolf” which will be on there. He also worked with Just Blaze. Plus a collabo ALBUM with Ratatat in the future. You all will be biting your tongue when some of this shit drops, just sayin’.

Do you people have opinions of your own? It’s cool if you don’t like it, fine, but Cudi’s doing his own thing and his debut album is gonna be fucking good, mark my words. He isn’t just following the footsteps of others. This is an intro track, don’t take a tone on an entire album just because you don’t appreciate his mixtape work or his different approach to making music post-A Kid Named Cudi. All you lames care about is fucking Kanye and how he ties into it all. Yeah, I like Kanye as much as the next person but Cudi is way more real and his music has more heart in my opinion. Kanye’s head is so far up in the clouds I fucking hate to even see him on tv in an interview or something. I think this intro stomps.

kid cudi said the first 7 songs are like this. theyre suppose to make you feel high ans shit… but the rest are gonna be like make her say and dat new new. im guessing mr solo dolo will be the intro track because of the way how its built up… (wink, wink)

  8. @why? I have kept a close eye on Kid Cudi all 2009. Yes, I’ve heard all of those songs. NOT impressed.

  9. kid turnswell

    kid cudi kills

  10. jo

    He’s such a hottie. ;)

  11. I LIKE IT.
    I ♥ IT.

  12. why?

When did Kid Cudi say his album was gonna be like his mixtape? This blog is slacking. Only two songs have been leaked from the album which aren’t finished and two others were released by his people that are done. Nobody but Cudi knows the tracklist so you haven’t heard even some of the album but four songs. Three out of those four you enjoyed so you can’t really say his music is boring if you haven’t heard most of the stuff he released after his mixtape.

Did you not hear these after mixtape songs? Can I be, Kinda Like A big Deal remix, Buggin Out Remix, His collab with N.O.R.E, Rollin Remix with Jackie Chain, Sky High, and a few more stuff that is really great. Excluding his Boom Boom Pow part everything has been good and the other crap you must have heard were songs that people took and mixed from Cudi’s old songs before the mixtape.

  13. WordSmith

The track samples The Menahan Street band…to me, that is dope in itself. I agree Cudi’s not at his best on it, but he’s definitely done worse than this track. You know what the problem is though? The beat never drops.

  14. moloo

if A Kid Named Cudi isn’t an album what is it? is it just a mixtape? a lot of people have been saying its good no matter what it is but when i heard day n nite on the radio i kind of avoided giving A Kid Name Cudi a listen. i was just wondering is “day n nite” one of his premier tracks? i’d also like to to say our bang on about a sour taste in your mouth with that new track. anyways these are just my two cents. thanks again for posting all these great music recommendations!

  15. AlexFromBuffalo

I have to totally agree with you. A Kid Named Kudi was one of the best mixtapes, right next to Wale’s 100 Miles And Runnin’. I don’t know what has happened to him. I don’t know if it’s Kanye’s influence or what but he needs to get back to his Hip Hop roots and get back with Plain Pat and Emile.

  16. lp

i dunno, i think the song is fucking sick. the beat is so insanely fresh!! it sounds like it would be a great intro to his debut album. actually i wouldnt be surprised if it ended up being remastered and used as his album intro. reminds me of lupes “the cool” intro kind of in an odd way…

  17. The track opens with a yawn. We were warned.

  18. brtgntr, I’m sure we got the general idea of the track… it’s not going to change much. It’s going to be just as underwhelming as it is now, I’m sure…

  19. brtgntr

Well you have to keep in mind before complaining that the track isn’t even completed, according to Kid Cudi on his Twitter.

I’d like to hear the full song first, thanks.

  20. Jonny

Cudi is just sick..he is the only person I could imagine performing on this melody. Like Kanye, he drops music that’s hot and totally left of what everybody else is doing. Too ill! :)

  21. Anonymous

this one is too slow for me. a very long intro

  22. Jackie

It has so much meaning and heart in it, I love it!

  23. Anonymous

solo dolo – the lonely stoner, rides for delf, self.

this dude is deep and shallow at the same time. fucking amazing.

  24. Mike

This isn’t so bad, but it’s not good and I expect GREATNESS from Cudi.

  25. George

    Ahh ok

  26. Warren

This is pretty bad… what’s going on Cudi?

  27. George, the current tracklist out only lists 8 songs on his album… :/

  28. George

This is hoooorrible!!! I love Kid Cudi, but this just wont live up to A Kid Named Cudi. But if 50% of his album is 4 songs that means there is only 8 songs on his album, that’s impossible.
