La Roux Tigerlily/Farewell To The Fairground (White Lies Cover) covers
La Roux is often overshadowed by the more accessible and likable Little Boots, and to be honest, neither of her new singles (In For The Kill, Not Your Toy, Bulletproof) have had any staying power on my iPod — not like their debut single “Quicksand.” Now that La Roux’s debut album has been splattered all over the internet, I’ve had a chance to poke my head in search of a song of “Quicksand” caliber. After a handful of listens, “Tigerlily” seems to be a good candidate. It’s by no means better than “Quicksand,” but it is a lot more interesting than US single “In For The Kill.” Edit: it might just be better than “Quicksand”

“Tigerlily” introduces La Roux’s seductive, sexy side to fantastic result. Elly Jackson’s confined vocals become feral and luring throughout the song; and at one point a remarkably menacing, timely and relevant “Thriller”-esque soliloquy floods the track.

“Tigerlily” precedes “Quicksand” on the eponymous album, marking for one of the year’s most thrilling one, two KO’s, putting it in the company of Little Boots’ “Remedy”-”Meddle,” Passion Pit’s “Little Secrets”-”Moth’s Wings,” Animal Collective’s “Daily Routine”-”Bluish,” and Phoenix’s “Lisztomania”-”1901.” Listen to “Tigerlily” here

  1. wait luis, you didnt like “in for the kill”? i thought it was fantastic, and “im not your toy’ and “fascination” were catchy, too. and while i do adore Little Boots, Im still struggling with the too-close-for-comfort similarities between “Meddle” and “Mathematics” as well as “Remedy” and “Every Little Earthquake”. All four are fantastic songs that ive been playing on repeat for the past 3 months, but damn, do they sound alike.

  2. Oh, I liked “In For The Kill” just fine, but it was no “Quicksand.” And I know where you’re coming from Re: Little Boots — but MAN, “Remedy” is fucking fantastic!

However, “Tigerlily” is ridiculously great.. better than any Little Boots song I’ve heard.

I would have to say that “Cover My Eyes” is the best song on the album though.

I really like the spoken part towards the end of Tigerlily. It reminds me a lot of Vincent Price and his voice work in Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

@alex: I don’t really find that Meddle and Mathematics are similar. They might follow the same song structure but other than that I think the similarities stop there.

  5. The beat of Tigerlily sounds like a rearranged In for the Kill. Tigerlily is way better and the spoken part does sound like the guy from Thriller.

Symmetry is my favourite from Little Boots though.

  6. any la roux song is better than any little boots song.
and i dont know how you dont like some songs by a pop act and not others.
they all sound the same, you either like the act or not.

if you ask me, tigerlily is far better than quicksand
it’s catchier, lighter, and doesn’t make my head hurt

@john m, this is where we disagree.. and probably Luis disagrees too..

  9. Ollie

Quicksand = the best. is it true that the spoken bit on Tigerlily is Elly Jackson’s dad?

  10. ellie
