 In the midst of Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak and Britney’s Circus leaking, Lil Wayne teamed up with the ironically named DJ Drama for Dedication 3. Never hearing the first two Dedications, I’m just assuming this is a big deal.Â
I don’t want to downplay the hype this obviously deserves, but I also don’t want to pretend like I know what I’m talking about. I was never really big on the whole mixtape thing. To me, mixtapes are just product of boredom, or a preface to an actual album. Knowing Lil Wayne (which I dont, but let’s move on), this mixtape is neither of those things. Knowing Lil Wayne, this mixtape is a piece of work that can stand up on its self and contend with the best of them.Â
I wasn’t going to feature Dedication 3 at all until I saw Pigeons and Planes feature some highlights. Before this I had given D3Â a proper listen and gave it some personal props and then dropped it off in my recycling bin. But when I read the 5 songs PP suggested, I gave them another shot.Â
I still probably won’t keep Dedication 3 on my iPod long, but these 5 songs should be enough:

I’ll throw down on that note. While Dedication 3 certainly isn’t his best mixtape, and he’s definitely way too high to write anything of worthwhile substance, the old Dedication 2 mixtape could be the best thing he’s put out. There will be misses. That is what comes when you sit in the studio all day long putting down track after track without trying to perfect the ones you just dropped.
That’s what happens with all his albums. He’s a track rapper, not an album rapper (but almost no one in the rap game besides Kanye makes any albums worth listening to).
I think Barack O’Drama still has it. I think Weezy still hits. I just think he needs to stop sipping on that syrup while these puerile mc’s rap over his stuff. Maybe beauty by comparison is his thought?
It does make me happy that he’s getting the blog time though. Pre – Carter III hype, he got nothing. My little New Orleans boy is all growed up. And swearing. A lot.
