Most Listened To..., Week Ending 5/30/2009 feature

If you’re anything like me, you are a tiny bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to charts and numbers (and iTunes organization, album art work, et al). If you’re anything like me, you will agree with me when I say that cutting-edge innovations like FixTunes (they created a discount code for any readers that would like to purchase FixTunes. It’ll give you $5 off the purchase price. Discount code: D3968) and Last.fm are utterly indispensable and essential.

I look at my Last.fm stats often and connect every music outlet I use to my account. I starting using the account in December of 2008, despite opening it in October of 2007. Since December, I’ve made to make every listen count, whether it be on my iPod, iPhone, at home, or in the car. As you might have already guessed, almost every moment in my life is attached to some sort of group of songs. I want document each week’s listening achievements. Take this journey with me.

This last week was obviously not spent listening to music non-stop. Blame Memorial Day Weekend, too little work (I thoroughly enjoy putting work off by listening to my favorite tunes), and having a little bit too much fun. Nevertheless, I have nothing to be ashamed of. Brill new releases by Passion Pit (237 plays), Phoenix (146 plays),  and Grizzly Bear (185 plays) are among my most listened to albums of the week, though I will admit that most of these listens are due to my incessant need to put certain songs on repeat! Case and point –  I played Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead” 67 times last week; as well as Phoenix’s “Lisztomania” and Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” 57 times each.

I also fell in love with MGMT again last week, with 212 plays – 59 of them are credited to “Kids” alone (still a vivid example of what I believe is a perfect song). 2008 and even some 2007 creeps back into my top tier of my personal music chart, with MGMT’s “Electric Feel,” “Time To Pretend,” Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” and the song I couldn’t stop listening to last week, Radiohead’s “Jigsaw Falling Into Place.”

Two tracks that I’ve just gotten really into also peek their way into my 20 most played tracks of the week — Phoenix’s “Fences” and Peaches’ “Mommy Complex.” Highly recommend you to give these two songs a listen, and maybe a download if you’re feeling ‘em.

  2. Last.fm is absolutely fantastic! My account is here: “http://www.last.fm/user/EvilGenius_3″

This week I have been listening to the new Dananananaykroyd debut and the new Maccabees cd too. Listening to Joy Division and Joy Division 2 (aka Interpol). Two Door Cinema Club are my new favourite band. Beatles are in there as ever, and I’ve been re-listening to Animal Collective as it hits my friends. Finally, with the release of Remix After All, I have been going through Daft Punk’s discography properly for the first time.

  3. Kids is good but the perfect song is Electric Feel, particularly the Justice remix.

Past week I’ve been listening to new music by Troy This, Electric Owls, Numéro#, Mille and Surkin’s remix of the Bionic Commando theme.

Now I don’t feel so bad about listening to Sleepyhead 82 times last week!

Do check out the live version @ http://woxy.com/blog/2009/02/05/lounge-act-recap-passion-pit/

My love of Sleepyhead has also translated into a love of the sample song, “Oro Mo Bhaidin” @ http://hypem.com/search/Oro%20Mo%20Bhaidin/1/

  6. @tim, yes! I believe we are going to continue that! we’re just in a mini hiatus!

  11. Uh oh, I think your blog has been taken over by 14 year olds. Or perhaps you yourself are 14. I don’t mean to sound crass, but MGMT warranting 200 plays? I agree that Kids is a great song, but even a song I consider to be crack I try not to listen to more than 5 times a day. In a few months you’ll farking hate it. Try getting concerts on Netflix, there are some incredible shows by David Byrne, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews . . . classic stuff. I guarantee you won’t find a better show than Elton’s 60th birthday. And I’m not even that big a fan. I further guarantee that MGMT isn’t going to have concerts that hold up 20 years hence. Last, anyone who wastes time watching this stuff on YouTube either doesn’t have a good stereo or good ears. Mark Knopfler ‘FTW.’ You kids study your history!!! (Surely ‘Passion Pit’ will be remembered in the same vein as ‘New Kids on the Block.’)

It is phenomenal to get iPhone/iTouch/iTunes artwork perfect.

Thank a million for this blog, (and for enabling RSS) because helps me beat songs to the radio, where incessant overplaying quickly makes me hate them!! You are truly PRETTY MUCH AMAZING!
