Fall Out Boy may have pushed back the release of their forthcoming album Folie A Duex 6 weeks (to December 16th), but this week the FOB’s are releasing “What A Catch, Donnie” as their third digital single; a part of their continueing effort to “countdown to” Folie A Duex. This single is their most impressive yet. “Donnie” is a fantastic piece of artistry and songwriting in Pete Wentz’ and Patrick Stump’s parts. Fall Out Boy do everything from inviting Elvis Costello and Panic at the Disco’s Brenden Urie on the track, to sampling their own monumental hits (”Sugar, We’re Going Down,” “This Ain’t A Scene…”).Â
For a very long time, I’ve been amazed at how Fall Out Boy seems to effortlessly reinvent themselves with every new record. So far, Folie is shaping up to be a completely new and brilliant side to Fall Out Boy. This new stuff, especially “What A Catch, Donnie,” is a step up from Infinity On High’s sweet blue-eyed soul attributes. It seems working with Baby Face brought the soul out of Patrick Stump. This new and exciting vocal style fits impeccably with Patrick Stump’s voice — something he effectively hid on Take This To Your Grave and FromUnder The Cork Tree (I won’t even count Evening Out with Your Girlfriend as a legit album).
This new stuff may be Fall Out Boy’s greatest works yet, but the truth is that none of the new material seems to be sticking the way “This Ain’t A Scene…” and “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs” did. Fall Out Boy: Where is your boy fan tonight?Â

I Love this song. I love how Patrick’s singing has improved all the way since Evening Out With Your Girlfriend.

Another Fall Out Boy song that has to grow on you before you see its true excellence. As good as any song released from Folie a Deux up to now

If this post was meant to be sarcastic, it’s genius.
I can’t hear the Costello bit
This song is amazing! Folie A Deux is going to be amazing.
Wait… I’ve listened again and caught it.
Damn I love this song
Fall Out Boy continues to reinvent nothing. Their songs are just a sad conglomeration of the best that others have already done. They are actually getting worse. What A Catch is at best playing off cliche pop song architecture with the strings guitars and vocals. It’s not striking or original in any sort of good way.
Though i hate saying this Panic At The Disco is the one doing it right. The last record definitely had the members bathing in a sound of the Beatles, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, but for its extravagance it struck the right chords.
Liking this music is akin to wanting Sarah Palin to be president. It’s nice, comfortable and you relate to it, but it’s also disarmingly intoxicating in the sense that you’re more likely being duped into thinking its good vs. actually exploring your options.
I mean its as bad as Coldplay’s new stuff.
Listen to Braid’s Frame and Canvas if you’re looking for excellence.
I think I will always love FOB’s song titles. Sure, they’ve always been kind of indulgent in a sense, but they’re also clever as hell. This song is good but doesn’t compare to their earlier stuff. Patrick sounds amazing though.
I am absolutely in love with this song. When I first heard it, I thought “Here we go again, another slow one like Golden”, but after hearing it a few times, I began to like it much more. The part towards the end with the tribute to all of their older hits is absolutely genius! Good job, boys! Keep up the amazing work!
ive got the album it rockz!!!!!
Fall Out Boy is amazing!!! What a Catch, Donnie is one of my favorite songs. I love the end where Elvis and everyone else sing parts of their other songs. By the way people it’s BRENDON URIE not Brenden Urie!!!!! You’re supposed to have everything spelt correctly. God, I could write a better more accurate article on this song!!!!!!
Fall Out Boy rocks!!!!!!!!
Hey JP,
You seem very passionate and knowledgeable about music. You probably listen to a lot of bands that most people haven’t ever heard of and have quite the wide palate of musical taste. If so, this is a good thing. It’s something you and I have in common. But I would like you to stop for a second and think to yourself whether or not you may have gone too far in saying that Fall Out Boy continues to reinvent nothing. This is not Nickelback. The lyrics of these songs are very well written, as they are a mix of sarcastic puns and pure seriousness simultaneously that only a duo like Wentz/Stump could give us. The tunes are not rehashed, and they are very good. Now, given the entire album is Beatles influenced, especially the blatantly copied formula of What a Catch Donnie (anyone who doesn’t believe me go listen to Sgt. Pepper’s and see that both singing out old songs at the end and inviting tons of guest stars to sing in the chorus has been done before), but WHO CARES?!?! When a formula works, there is no reason not to do it again (provided, of course that you let some time go by before you copy the formula, like say the 40 years it’s been since Sgt. Pepper’s). All of music is comprised from things that have worked for others before, what makes them interesting are the different combinations in which this is done. Using the standards you have set forth, almost all music nowadays would be reinventing nothing.
this song is AMAZING. It made me cry. Patricks voice is the best in the world. Pete is gorgeous. And talented. Then Joe and Andy are amazing too! I love this song too much!
FOB IS THE BEST BAND THAT HAS EVER EXISTED ON THE PLANET EVER!!!!! I love them! Favorite song ever!!!!!!!!!!
