Keane Better Than This

In less than a couple of weeks, the internet has unearthed three new Keane tracks. This last one to leak, “Better Than This,” continues to channel Brandon Flowers’ more annoying serenades on Hot Fuss. There are two sides of Hot Fuss, the half that is extraordinary and mind-blowing, and the half that is bitterly underwhelming. This new drip from Keane’s out-of-control leaky faucet sadly belongs in the latter category. This is truly not the Keane we all know and love — and I was even starting to love the “Spiraling” and “The Lovers Are Losing” Keane; “Better Than This” brings it down several notches.

Hey Keane! You can do so much better than this!

I Love the irony in this song.

  1. I agree with you, don’t know if I am warming up to the track or not. The other 2 are great too. Hopefully the album is solid overall!

Ummm.. Brandon Flowers & Hot Fuss are Killers, not Keane. Unless I missed something, in which case slap me.

Deeply disappointed by ‘Spiralling’ the moment I heard it. Barely gave it a few listens when they gave it free from their site…then forgot about it!! That has never happened to me & one of my favourite bands. That song is channelling the band ABC from the 80’s (an era/sound which I understand was an influence on this album.) ‘The Lovers Are Losing’ has given me some faith…’Better Than This’ – I definitely like it as it goes on. Has some Bowie influence in there with the keys. Thanks for putting these up!

The reason that you think its not the keane we all know and love is because you dont seem to have grasped the concept of what keane have tried to do with their new album.

Yes, they sound alot different to what they sounded like on hopes and fears or under the iron sea, but that is because they have always been a changing band, even since before they were famous. they were a full-on guitar band before they became piano rock. the story behind better than this, for example is that sonically it’s a big departure, but lyrically, being about the state of celebrity culture. People see it as such an important thing and pin so much hope on it. the fame and celebrity side of things is something I find hard to reconcile.

The problem with manufactured popular music, which is peaking the charts now nd always (sadly), is that people, like you namely, dont seem to appreciate the machinations behind a song or their meaning or what impact it might have on people’s lives. they just chew up the next number one pop artist and spit them back out again.

The fact of the matter is that keane are an amazing band and that this latest effort is as legendary as their first or second albums, if not more so. If people took a bit more time to think about a song a bit more thoroughly, then it would be alot more appreciated.

There are alot of people out there who think as I do, thankfully, and that’s why keane are going to be one of the legendary bands of our generation and they will bring out a whole hell of alot of new albums and they’ll be amazin as well.

And by the way, out of the billions of people on the planet, I could really count on the fact that that joke has never been told before.
