Lady GaGa is the most promising pop acts around at the moment and I do love pop music. Unlike most people, I don’t write off GaGa as a wannabe-Britney (or, ultimately, wannabe-Madonna), she is definitely something entirely different. She isn’t covering any new ground, but she is intriguing.

She writes her own songs and was heavily involved in the production of her critically acclaimed debut, The Fame (which missed my Top Albums of 2008 list by a hair, btw). One particular song on The Fame really stands out: “Poker Face.” The track is a ridiculously infectious synth-tastic cut that gives The Knife and Robyn a run for their money.

Then GaGa went completely Konichiwa Bitches on us and popped her pretty little retro-sexual head at Cherry Tree Records and performed a piano-led rendition of her next  #1 hit (“Just Dance” has just topped Billboard’s Hot 100!). I was actually a bit skeptical when I heard that GaGa had pushed the danceability aside and laid “Poker Face” out in such a way. As it turns out, “Poker Face” sounds great acoustic. Who knew…

She’s more wannabe Bowie, and it’s totally working for her. Guilty pleasure? Maybe. But completely and totally fun. Has anyone snagged the live version of “Just Dance” from the Cherry Tree Sessions. That was off the hook!

I’d love to hear the live version of Just Dance!

But this version of Poker Face is just lovely — it’s awkward at times, but for the most part it’s great

See, she’s way better than Britney… she’s actually talented! Listen to those pipes! And she writes all of her stuff too? Damn.

This one is definitely the next Madonna. Even if it is a Bowie-influenced Madonna.

Wow. She’s actually very talented.
The Fame is one of the albums I bought last year that is still getting a lot of play on my iPod….
I can hardly wait until her next album.

Agreed Sarah. I simply do not understand the hype with this girl. I listened to her whole album, and it’s average electropop, at best. Ok, her look is different, so? Whatever.

I have to admit that this Acoustic Version is kind of nice, though. The original version is just annoying. This one actually sounds like someone gave more than 5 minutes of thought to the melody.
