Shakira She Wolf / Loba listen
Shakira is one of the most undeniably interesting and talented international superstars of our generation. With her astonishingly great English-crossover album Laundry Service, and her follow-up dual albums Oral Fixation/Oral Fijacion Vol. 1 & 2 (specifically mega-singles “La Tortura” and “Hips Don’t Lie”), Shakira has become a fixture in pop music and is known for her genre-blending.

On her newest pair of singles, “She Wolf” and Spanish counterpart “Loba,” the Latin-rock-goddess ditched her signature ferocious vocals and jangly guitar riffs for a very electronic, very disco flavor.

“She Wolf,” the first single off her upcoming album of the same name, is unlike anything Shakira has ever done in the past. In 2009, the realm of disco-y electro-pop is quite crowded unfortunately, but it’s Shakira’s unique voice and fantastic, nonsensical lyrics that make this single a stand-out among the La Roux’s and Little Boots’ of the world.

Listen to “She Wolf” / “Loba” here.

It goes without saying that the single sleeve is fantastic. Now the question is… which version do you like better? I prefer the Spanish version over the English version simply because it seems to flow better, and it sounds cooler for some reason.

I agree completely with your review of “She Wolf.” I only have had the song since sunday and already can’t get it out of my head, its a unique pop song that i hope becomes a big hit. As a big Santigold fan Im also excited to see that John Hill, a collaborator on Santigold’s debut, is a producer on “She Wolf.” Im impressed by Shakira’s choice in producer. Shakira is def. a unique and brilliant pop star.

    Wow I love it!
It sounds like it was written & produced by the Scissor Sisters

great song. my initial reaction was “wtf is this?” but then i couldn’t stop listening. also i love the placement of the fake wolf sound effects…

i agree–the spanish version does flow more naturally.

‘my initial reaction was “wtf is this?”’

Hehe, I thought the same thing.

‘also i love the placement of the fake wolf sound effects’

I don’t think those are fake wolf sound effects. I think that’s is Shakira howling

    Good track, good track.

I also think it would be cool to see a mashup between Feist’s ‘Sea Lion’.

i love shakira but im not too sold on this one yet maybe it’s a grower

  9. anon!

haha, hilarious that she’s doing the “awoooo” herself. makes me like the song just that much more.

    She’s looking like a blond Kim K, and that’s not a compliment.
She’s just striping to get attention and sell records, and the song is horrid…I have my ears bleeding. I don’t like it at all.
I used to like her song, but not this one. I’m waiting for the next.

This song its AMAZING, I cannot stop listening to it… she is Unique.

  12. My thoughts have been releasing two versions kind of sucks because people will inevitably compare the two and the Spanish version can’t help but feel more “natural” to Shakira when everything else departs from the type of sound we associate her with. But at the same time it’s a brilliant move because she’s setting up a comparison to herself and not other pop artists delving into electro-disco sounds at the moment.

And is she sampling anything? There is something about the rhythm of the refrain that sounds soooo familiar.

  13. VatoFeo

    Well, same here.
I have some kind of obsession with this song, I like both versions but the spanish version definitely flows more natural.
I listen to it over and over, I can’t wait to watch the video.

against all the other commments, i think she wolf is better. I am spanish, and the fact of understanding what is she saying (nonsense) really creates a weird (bad) feeling. And of course, wtf? was my initial reaction, but this song is one of those that improves in your ear the more you listen to it.

Bear: To me it sounds like a sample of the beat from Britney’s “You Drive Me Crazy”. She Wolf is my new guilty pleasure. I have no idea why I like this song or the strange wolf noises. Someone shoot me now.

although her song might be very electro-pop-disco like a lot of the songs on the circuit right now, the funky groove in the beginning, her howling, and her Latin sounding voice still makes it extremely unique. i love the high pitched/electro sounding chorus, it’s very chic and very ‘today’ oriented. i have no doubt about that it will hit the top of the charts very quickly.

    she’s like a latin madonna
