PMA College Music Project: UCLA Los Angeles, CA college music project
It has been a long time coming, but we’re finally ready to unveil the next featured school in PMA’s ongoing College Music Project! Eight from students who live or dwell with UCLA students and have embraced the 10 quintessential UCLA dorm party songs many times. I really hope more college students continue to email me with their School’s Top 10 songs played around the halls and at parties. I’d like to make this a regular series, but I need your help!

Without further ado, here is UCLA’s Top 10 Songs (According to 8 entries)

M.I.A. – Paper Planes
MGMT – Time to Pretend
N*E*R*D – Spaz
MGMT – Kids
Coldplay – Viva La Vida
Cut Copy – Light and Music
Radiohead – Bangers & Mash
Vampire Weekend – Ottoman
Black Kids – Hit The Heartbreaks
Weezer – Pork & Beans

It’s weird how some of the best songs of 2008 always find themselves on repeat at these parties — no matter how old they are (see: MGMT, M.I.A., Radiohead). In fact, the only “new” song on this list is Vampire Weekend’s “Ottoman.” Are these UCLA kids behind on their music? I hope not! But I always catch myself listening to what I know is good and not what’s fresh.

Ah, “Paper Planes” has been everywhere since Pineapple Express came out. But seriously, this is a good playlist.

I was wondering when you were going to post the next episode of your College Music Project. I really liked the first one. This one isn’t any different.

This is a great idea! Thanks.

Yeah, it does seem like UCLA is sort of behind. Or maybe they just like Coldplay too much.

HAHA! is that a model of UCLA on the Sims? Sure looks like it!

Wow, a lot of these songs have been around since 2007 (Radiohead, M.I.A., MGMT, Black Kids).

UCLA must have some snoozer parties.

I go to UCLA, and I’m not sure if this playlist is all that accurate. But I won’t lie, MGMT is a guilty pleasure of mine and my friends — they’re always playing at our parties.

It may be old, but Cut Copy is too good to deny!

Great list PMA. Love the idea! I’ll get around to emailing you about my school tonight!

I missed the first one, I’ll check it after I finish downloading all these.

    This is nice.

    Amen.

This is a great idea, but by far the hardest thing will be truly representing what thousands are listening to when only being in contact w/ 8 students. Hopefully this just grows and grows.

I am interested to see how different things actually are across the college landscape. I honestly think most of the same music is everywhere, and this is a great way to find out.

P.S. “OHMYGAWD, THAT IS SO 2007!!! ” All you uppity music listeners calm down. This list was compiled from 8 entries. Trust me, UCLA is still much cooler than you.

  13. This is a fantastic idea, however I don’t think the results truly show what is being played. Let me explain. Generally music bloggers are more on the indie side, at least that is what I have noticed. There are some who talk about what is mainstream/on the charts, but a good part of bloggers tackle indie stuff.

So I think the people that are submitting these lists are more fans of that type of music. I think if it was a more general poll of the whole school the list would be drastically different. But I could be wrong, thats just me. Pretty cool anyway.

“Light & Music” alone makes this a GREAT playlist, I can’t get enough of that song!
