Purity Ring have, to date, released three songs; we’d be mad if those three songs weren’t so damn good. Their stingy perfectionism is also a kind of exciting hint – what else could Megan James and Corin Roddick possibly be sitting on? Turns out there’s a lot of pure unreleased gold on the duo’s hard-drives, as evidenced by their fourth released song, “Obedear,” the first single from their first record Shrines. You’ll recognize that catchy main loop if you’ve visited the duo’s website lately, but it must be heard in context. “Obedear” is another chillingly amazing, futuristic, apocalyptic pop track: James sings something typically incantation-like about how “the sky is low,” everything is built up over cold, echoing drones that fade hauntingly in and out. The legendary 4AD is dropping Shrines on July 24; we can’t wait.
