Q&A Friday: Is It Too Early To Talk About Music Festivals?

Click on the turntable on the left to listen to a continuous stream of music featured on Pretty Much Amazing - updated every day. For more, you can check out the Best Songs of 2012.

So this week’s question is an easy one: Are you going to ? Or are you saving your money for another festival? I also know that this passed year hasn’t been all too nice to anyone’s wallet. Hopefully I can help out.

This week’s Q&A is sponsored by the Lagerado Music Festival. They are being really cool and giving PMA Two (2) tickets to giveaway to one lucky winner. That’s right, you get to go to Langerado for FREE. All you have to do is get yourself there, get a hotel, buy your booz and drugs and enjoy the cool lineup (Death Cab For Cutie, Snoop Dogg, The Faint, Ryan Adams, Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Girl Talk, Black Kids, The Virgins, Tokyo Police Club, Ra Ra Riot, ah, just check the whole lineup here), oh and you have to answer the question!

Maybe it’s a bit too late to talk about some of the pre-summer festivals like SXSW, who has already confirmed hundreds of bands and has had it’s packages on sale for weeks. But the summer fests kick off with Coachella, at least they do in my book. And even Coachella has already set its dates (April 17-19th) and has confirmed a handful of bands (including The Killers, Fleet Foxes, Sebastien Tallier, Girl Talk,  and LUPE FIASCO) and the rumored acts keep getting better (and sometimes, more ludicrous). The Coachella rumor mill whispers of big performances by Britney Spears, OutKast, Animal Collective, and the Green Day to bring in the big numbers. I actually wouldn’t be all that surprised to see Animal Collective on the final ballot. This is their year, for sure.

Coachella is usually the first huge festival of the year (not including the Austin take-over that is SXSW) and usually sets the mood for the rest of the festivals’ headliners. For example, in 2008, Jack Johnson not only headlined Coachella, but SF’s Outside Lands, NJ’s All Points West, and the Virgin Music Festival (and I’m probably missing some still).

I should also mention that there is a runner-up prizepack, courtesy of the Sundance Channel and Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…

The runner up will receive:

1 Keen/Sundance Bag
1 Pair of Speakers
1 T-Shirt
1 Notebook
1 Sigg/Sundance Thermos

Note: all of the prizes are, in fact, eco-friendly!

Let’s round off this post with some Gigamesh (one third of DiscoTech) remixes. I likey.

Radiohead – Everything in its Right Place (Gigamesh Remix)

Lykke Li – Little Bit (Gigamesh Remix)

& you remember this one…

T.I. – Whatever You Like (DiscoTech Remix)

that one was Gmesh’s. Impressive, no?

I’d love to go to Coachella after hearing how great it has been the past few years, but Atlanta, GA is little far from Cali. I’ll probably go to Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza….but I’d rather go to Lagerado!

lollapalooza!! i feel ashamed of not having been to a lollapalooza show yet..and i live in chicago

Definitely not going to Coachella because I live on the East Coast, but I’m definitely going to Siren since I missed it last year. And since it’s, you know, free.

Carrie January 23, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Another free Brooklyn music festival I plan on hitting up, Afro-Punk.

I won’t be going to Coachella – planning for something – just don’t know what. I’d love to win the tickets!!

Bonnaroo, for sure! Thinking about those sweaty summer days in Manchester is getting me through this harsh winter…

Sudipa January 23, 2009 at 9:41 pm

I am probably not going to go to Coachella considering I’m on the east coast, but I’ve been to Lolla the past two years and absolutely loved it! However, I’ve been dreaming of Langerado and was SO close to going last year, but it just didn’t work out! I would LOVE to go!!

As a poor college kid in the NW, Sasquatch is realistic, but Coachella is a dream!

Reply

Warwick January 23, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Coachella is out for me this year, but hoping to get to Sasquatch finally. No Pemberton Festival this year either, so I’m hoping the Whistler Festival returns bigger and better (Elvis Costello, BSS, and others played at a very under-attended festival the week before Pemberton).

Bamboozle ’09. No Doubt and fucking Paramore and tons of others. We’ve already spoken about this. I’m still counting on that 100 bucks if I can get you what I promised. I’m dead serious. I’m considering setting up PayPal right now because I’m so confident I could get it to happen. Or maybe I’ll be an asshole and just not do it. Or do it, and show it to you, and then take it down from youtube, just so you can’t post it. hahahahahahahahahaha

No Coachella, I’m on the East coast, but I’m looking forward to Osheaga in Montreal. It’s pretty new but the line-ups have been killer for the past few years.

I can’t afford to go down to Coachella, but am hoping to check-out some cheaper festivals this summer. My buddy and I drove down to Langerado a couple years back from Halifax (NS, Canada) in one 36-hour shot. I still have the shirt off Girl Talk’s back as a memento. I still owe my friend $1,500 for the trip though, so it would be a dream to win some free tix to hit him back ;) .

I’ve got hope to head to coachella from ny with friends this spring. Fingers crossed and money willing.

Next option. Bonnaroo.

Patrick Mahan January 24, 2009 at 6:28 am

Coachella would be nice.. Langerado is most likely the closest for me but money would be my only problem.

So if i were to go to a festival, Langerado would probably be it.

I’m not going to Coachella but I’m saving money up for Siren since it’s close and I can only afford close, haha. I haven’t been to a music festival yet either.

Reply

Rowie January 24, 2009 at 8:17 am

Oh man, I forgot about All Points West, that’s the festival I’m actually meaning to save up money for and is close too.

Confusion January 24, 2009 at 8:29 am

I’d love to go to Coachella, but it’s too far, plus there’s plenty of good music on the east coast.

Went to Coachella 2005-07 (NIN! ChemBros! Daft Punk! Rage! Willie Nelson!). Made the conscious decision to try Lollapalooza in ’08 — missed Portishead live in Indio but caught the whole thing on Blue Room so there’s that — and had an awesome time. I’m sure some of the rumoreds and confirmeds are going to make Coachella ’09 spectacular, but based on last year’s hype I’m giving All Tomorrow’s Parties New York a try in September.

FWIW, the Langerado lineup’s pretty ace, too.

Marcus January 24, 2009 at 9:51 am

I’m going to the New Orleans Jazz Fest (since its two miles away) and Bonnaroo this year, but if I had the money I’d go to every major fest.

P.S. Jack Johnson played at Bonnaroo last year too.

Chad January 24, 2009 at 10:15 am

Being a poor college student I’m trying to start scraping some cash together now for Bonnaroo, which after going last year make me yearn for a second trip. I’d cut off my pinky finger though for some Langerado tickets.

I’m not going to Coachella unless miracles happen but I’d use the hell out of that water bottle, let me tell YOU.

fuck YES im going to coachella. and bonaroo. and lollapalooza. it’ll be broke for a year but it’ll be worth it cause then i’m going to college and i won’t be able to steal money from my parents anymore

WAT?! How about Ultra in Miami, it has a killer electronic lineup. Coachella has taken too long to get the lineup out and I haven’t been interested since they went to 3 days (I did enjoy 05 when I went though).

Reply

Edward January 24, 2009 at 1:41 pm

The line-up right now isn’t great enough to justify the work it would take to get to the West Coast for me.

I just wish I’d been there last year to see Prince….

I dont think i’ll be going to Coachella but I really am considering Bonnaroo. I cant wait to see the line-up, which should be announced soon i believe. Coachella is something I plan on doing sometime just not this year, unfortunately.

I would love to go to Coachella if it wasn’t so far away (I’m in Ohio). But last year I went to Rothbury & I think that’s the number one on my list. Amazing!

Hit me with em’ tickets! I have looking for the opportunity to attend for the first to one of this famous summer festivals in America. I have had the fortune to go in Europe to several and they were sick. SXSW actually sounds amazing this years. Specially since they have 3 Colombian bands in the line-up which will for sure set that fucking place on fire. It really doesn’t mater where you end up as long as you end up somewhere hopefully with no permanent scars.

Ack! I actually had this conversation with some friends earlier tonight. I would love to go to Coachella this year (never been before) but I don’t think I’ll have enough fundage to hit Coachella by april- most of my friends won’t either. Since I live in Texas, the sentiment has been to go to sxsw in the spring (if anything), and then maybe bonaroo in the summer (in lieu of ACL Fest). I will definitely hit at least one festival outside of Texas this year though!

Alice January 25, 2009 at 9:34 am

Went to Lollapalooza last year and it was great. Unfortunately, I’m going to be out of the states during all the summer music festivals. But! It does mean I’ll be in Europe during Glastonbury, Roskilde, Rock Werchter, Benicassim, and a bunch of others. I’ve heard amazing things about all of them, so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to save enough of my money to at least hit up one.

Not coachella this year. bonnaroo for sure!

Reply

Sam January 25, 2009 at 3:31 pm

It’s definitely not too early to talk about the festival circuit…I probably don’t have the money to do Coachella, so I’m still not sure about that one. Probably a no, but if the lineup is orgasmic, I might try to rack up a little debt to do it…I’ll be on the East coast for the summer, so hopefully they’ll do All Points West again. I’ll definitely go to APW and maybe Lollapalooza if the money and lineup is right. Would love to go to Lagerado, though…

Matt January 25, 2009 at 5:51 pm

I would love to go to Coachella the line up looks great, but sadly i live on the east coast so it seems very unlikely. All Points West is the way to go considering its wayy closer.

Coachella’s not in the plans as of yet, but I’m graduating this year (finally!!) and so hoping to celebrate the best way possible this summer – being blown away by ridiculously good music.

Def. not too early to talk about music fests. Although the season might be for Chicago(home) and Midwestern fests, sharing rumors about which artists are coming is always fun. I’m looking forward to Lagerado since its much closer (time/locale) right now.

I’m in LA and got to see one day (Sat) of Coachella last year but I’m not sure I’m gonna have the cash this year. I was already kind of planning on flying to Miami to visit my sister and go to Langerado. Free tix would be awesome!

Reply

Finchmeister January 26, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I was informed today by a cute girl at my college in NYC that “If you got tickets for Langerado, I’d drive us down and owe you for life”. Now, she happens to be Orthodox Jewish (and in a pre-arranged marriage, I think) but if I/we got this hookup, the ecstasy just might transcend religious barriers, and I would shout out ‘PMA!’ to the heavens.

I’ve been wanting to go to Coachella ever since my friend from L.A. talked about it and we saw pictures of it from Mark the Cobrasnake, but I’m a poorly college student who can’t go. But since my school’s in Chicago, I’ll definitely be going to Lollapalooza!
