Merrill Garbus’ weird tUnE-yArDs project started garnering attention from fans when she was opening for Dirty Projectors while they were promoting Bitte Orca, during which she released her first LP Bird Brains, showcasing her DIY ethos and knack for outlandish melodies. The California artist/instrumentalist/songwriter has now released her first single from her sophomore effort, w h o k i l l, in the form of “Bizness” (she likes her awkward title stylization doesn’t she?).
The tune is certainly more polished and not as grainy/lo-fi as songs from the debut, but continues to demonstrate Garbus’ phenomenal vocal abilities over some eccentric Afro guitar rhythms. “Bizness” was first premiered on Zane Lowe’s show on BBC Radio 1, but is now available for download, for free! w h o k i l l is out April 18th via 4AD.
