L.A. rapper Schoolboy Q and his frequent collaborator Kendrick Lamar are back with another joint track, the minimalist, hyper-chill “Blessed.”
Maybe it’s about time some of the better tropes of chillwave extended to hip-hop – that minimal beat, with its vocal melismas and skittering bass, sounds borrowed from a Washed Out song, and Q and Lamar effortlessly drop plenty of rhythmic, deft verses disavowing feeling stressed about the quibbles of everyday life. The end product is almost calming, endlessly relistenable. The track will show up on Q’s upcoming record, Habits and Contradictions, out January 14.
