Earlier this morning, Stereogum put up its epic Is This It tribute, Stroked, featuring covers from Peter Bjorn & John, The Morning Benders, Real Estate, Owen Pallett and Heems from Das Racist, among others.

Owen Pallett’s string-fused rendition of my favorite Is This It track, “Hard To Explain” is simply beautiful and I thank Stereogum for putting the two together, but I know that once people look at the tracklist, eyes will immediately fly to track seven: the morning benders’ cover of The Strokes’ smash and crowd fave, “Last Night”.

It’s more than just a great young band covering a now-classic from another great, once-young band. It’s the striking shift to muted synthpop that the benders have undertaken for the cover. Is this a preview of what we can expect from the band on the follow-up to their much loved Big Echo LP? Time will tell, I guess. For now, check out the cover:
