Actually, the proper “old” christmas carols like “Deck The Halls”, “Ding Dong Merrily On High”, “Good King Wencelas” etc. are all pretty much Victorian fakes. You’d be hard pressed to find a commonly sung christmas carol from before 1850.

I love the Feliz Navidad translation! So true.

In response to #3, I read that “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was written for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) with Judy Garland. And the lyrics were much darker than we know them today:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last.
Next year we may all be living in the past.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, make the yuletide gay.
Next year we may all be many miles away.
No good times like the olden days, happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who were dear to us will be near to us no more.
But at least we all will be together if the fates allow.
From now on we’ll have to muddle through somehow.
