This might be the most original brand of r&b since How To Dress Well. The Weeknd, Toronto’s mysterious, Drake supported new buzz band has been turning heads with tunes like “What You Need” and “The Morning.” Past tunes have been a wonderful blend of lo-fi, r&b and electronica, and their latest “Wicked Games” follows suit.
Here, what separates this duo of Abel Tesfaye and Jeremy Rose from other lo-fi hip hop sampling outfits are the hard hitting vocals, the emotionality of the lyrics, the richness in melody. Tesfaye’s voice is seriously the standout, but the bass is equally ruthless. Chilling tune, this one is.
