Top 10 Singles in the World, week 41 charts musicI’ve always been interested in the music charts — I keep tabs on the happenings of America’s music charts via Idolator’s fantastic column, 100 and Single written by chart guru Chris Monalphy. But much more interesting is the Global Track Chart, which monitors the top songs in the world.

This week at the GTC, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” takes the No. 1 spot for the 7th week running. As it turns out, Katy Perry’s bi-curious summer jam caught on late in Europe and Australia. Though “I Kissed A Girl” has dropped off to No. 31 in the US’ Top 100 singles chart (though her new single “Hot ‘N Cold” is currently sitting at No. 6 — expect that to chart worldwide in 2-3 months). The rest of the chart seems pretty straightforward: Rihanna, no surprises here, P!nk, Coldplay, T.I., Kanye West, Pussycat Dolls. The only thing I’d like to mention is Kid Rock’s appearance in the Global chart. In the US, Kid Rock’s radio-friendly “All Summer Long” wasn’t released on iTunes guaranteeing (and limiting) its charting position into the lower 30’s-40’s. However, in Europe, the single has been made available digitally.

With Katy Perry’s washed up single at No. 1 and Kid Rock’s anti-charting song in the Top 10, it’s clear that America’s music chart isn’t as dominating as I thought it was. Talk about reality check.
