Breaking news of the day – Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick didn’t always busy himself churning out that weird brand of electro-pop that lives where funk meets chillwave. In fact, as recently as June 2009, he was making scuzzy lo-fi guitar pop, and he’ll soon be digging ten of those old recordings out of the garage for a release titled after the date of their creation. Our first taste of June 2009 is the complex, dizzying “Dead Pontoon,” which sounds intermittently like earlier Cloud Nothings (vis a vis the scuzz), Dirty Projectors (vis a vis the multitude of layered, interlocking guitar tracks), and Grizzly Bear (vis a vis Bundick’s harmonizing with, um, himself). We guess that means pretty good. Carpark will drop June 2009 on April 24, digitally and on CD as well as in a vinyl box set of five 7”s.
