True story: I heard “Ruby Soho” at a sushi bar last week and I instantly thought that Vampire Weekend would sound great performing this. And they do.
Everyone’s favorite chart-topping indie darlings stopped by a popular radio show, and covered Rancid’s “Ruby Soho”, an event to which I will ascribe cosmological significance to, given what happened at the sushi bar.
I’ve always felt that the best covers are those that wouldn’t sound or feel misplaced in an artist’s body of work. Vampire Weekend’s rendition “Ruby Soho” sounds like it would fit perfectly between “Campus” and “Bryn” on their self-titled debut — and that’s the highest praise I can ever give it. As a longtime Rancid fan, words cannot express how much I hate this. VW is okay, but…turning Rancid’s broken-truck-axel sound into Ivy League lounge music? What the fuck?
that’s funny, what sushi bar were u at?? i can’t imagine listening to this while eating sushi….
hah, it wasn’t a traditional sushi bar, i’ll tell you that. it was more like a BAR that offered some spicy tuna rolls on the side.
Gotta side with Mara on this one. It’s as if they stripped the song of its energy and enthusiasm.
Totally get that. I guess it helps that I was never a really big Rancid fan.
I just don’t think it possible for me to tire of Vampire Weekend – thats it!

Vampire Weekend’s “Ruby Soho” cover sounds like a less enthusiastic version of Bedouin Soundclash. There, I said it. [link to post]
