Erudite, poetic lyrics, gentle finger-plucked guitar, quick drums, the gradual growth of echo, reverb, depth, power, a harsh and undeniable reality: “I was a dreamer staring out windows / because that’s where the dream goes.” “Becoming a Jackal” is a very restrained song about losing yourself, a straightforward pop-folk tune about turning into something else. It’s a powerful song, and flawlessly crafted.
