As 2009, and the decade come to a close, PMA will be looking back at our favorite songs of the last ten years. We will update a list with 75 empty slots until we reach that song that changed everything. You can keep track of this list by keeping an eye on this page. We make these lists in hopes that you guys will chime in the comments and share your favorite musical moments of the noughties.
No band has gone farther on as little actual musical output as of late than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The fashionable Brooklyn trio has been drooled over by magazines and hipsters alike. Their debut album, Fever To Tell reaches its peak on the astonishing “Maps”, where Nick Zinner’s lithe guitar playing, Brian Chase’s beats, and Karen O’s sensitive singing are assembled into an emotionally charged, rip-your-heart-out, cry-yourself-to-sleep, punk-pop gem.
As Zinner supplies layers of chiming, Kevin Shields-inspired guitar harmonies, Karen sings lyrics that are simple and succinct, yet soulful, saying all that needs to be said, in a voice that displays a sensitivity we haven’t heard from her before: “Pack up, don’t stray…Wait/They don’t love you like I love you.” It’s a song of unadulterated beauty, one of the finest we’ve heard in these last ten years. – Adrien Begrand

recency effect, much? This list is quite overloaded with the 2nd half of the decade as of now.
This song came out in 2003. I think this list is fairly well-balanced, especially compared to ones that over-stress the first half of the decade.
Maps is early decade, 2003.
maps is a great song though, was coincidentally listening to the acoustic version of it when i stumbled upon this thread.
